WWE Ruining Their Careers: Top Ten Chaotically Booked Superstars
Hello Buzzers, Buzz is back with his latest slide-show. Please read the introduction carefully before proceeding with the slide show. Among many things WWE officials seem to be dealing with terribly these days, one thing really drew my attention. The messy way of booking some current superstars. When I say chaotically booked, I'm neither talking about talented superstars who are currently jobbing to others, nor am I trying to point to overrated and undeserving superstars who are currently pushed. My point is completely different. I'm only concerned about superstars who WWE seem struggling while booking their segments and matches, and can't make up their minds about them. We all know who the jobbers, mid-carders, upper mid-carders, rising superstars and main-eventers are. But what would your thoughts be when you see a superstar promoted as the future of this business, just to watch him roll down the hill in the following weeks? How would you react when you see a wrestler defeating a top superstar, just to watch him lose to a jobber on the following week? Or how about a superstar who jumps from the main-event and world title scene to the land of jobbing in less than one month? I think those questions are enough to clarify what I'm trying to say. Actually, this wasn't an easy list to prepare, and I had to exclude some superstars who might have had strange bookings, but still, they weren't as weird as the ones on the list. I chose the superstars who I think were harmed because of WWE's chaotic booking. So, in the following slides, we'll take a look at the superstars who I think WWE are really messing with their bookings. Again I say, please keep in mind that I'm not talking about superstars who should be pushed or bumped, but I'm only concerned about the way those superstars are booked. P.S: I added a diva as a special mention.
10. Ted DiBiase Jr.
1 of 14
The "Fortunate Son" is No. 10 on my list.
Ever since the split of the Legacy, many people predicted a better future for Ted DiBiase, Jr.
Dibiase's first step was adopting his father's old millionaire gimmick. He even brought back the "Million Dollar Championship."
Ted Dibiase went on looking for a "Virgil" type servant just like his father used to have. He hired superstars and paid them to do different tasks for him.
Later, he hired the real Virgil who used to be his father's servant, only to fire him one month later. This was due to hiring the lovely Maryse as his new personal assistant.
In other words, WWE reintroduced this guy with a new gimmick, and anyone watching him at that time surely thought that this was an indicator for a future inevitable push.
But what happened instead? He had a mini feud with Morrison before finding himself doing nothing other than hanging out with Maryse backstage. He never had a legit feud.
He never defended the new title he's holding. The only thing we've seen from him was being asked by Edge to join Team WWE against Nexus. Even this was dropped in few weeks.
It was like someone promoting a new product without introducing it to the market.
Is this the new way of hyping superstars? Well, it's not strange.
Honestly speaking, I'm not a fan of Ted, and I was one of the few people who thought that Cody Rhodes was better than him and has higher chances of receiving a push.
It seems that I was proven right. Just look at each superstar and judge.
It was said that WWE had plans for making DiBiase lead a new stable, but it seems those plans were canceled. So, I think WWE are really struggling with his booking.
Let's face it, the only thing good about DiBiase at the moment is Maryse. Other than this, he's barely appearing in matches.
Furthermore, he has no character at all, which probably explains the paring with Maryse.
9. Matt Hardy
2 of 14
Nothing really major about Hardy. I know he's not in shape anymore, and I don't expect to see him a World Champion in the future.
But the weird thing about him in the past few months was the amount of suspensions and injuries he received; In addition to the amount of announcements about him taking some time off.
How many times was he suspended? How many times was he injured and crushed? How many times did WWE make us feel that he'll be out for a while?
Was I the only person who never understood the point behind his feud with Drew McIntyre?
How many times did we see him beat McIntyre just to watch him lose again and get either his head, leg or his whole body crushed?
The whole storyline was messy. It made me feel as if WWE had nothing to do with Matt Hardy other than play with his career.
8. Christian
3 of 14
After his return from TNA, Christian was one of the best superstars at the now defunct ECW, and he was one of the few superstars who made me watch this show (ECW) again.
He was built as a dominant champion there. Everybody anticipated that "Captain Charisma" would be moving to RAW or Smackdown and win a World Title.
However, WWE destroyed any credibility he built in ECW by making him lose to Ezekiel Jackson in the last episode of ECW. This was a horrible move for both Christian and Jackson.
Christian was moved to RAW later were he wrestled in filler matches with no major achievements.
Four months ago, he was drafted to Smackdown in the annual draft, and everybody expected him to become a top superstar on this show, given that most WWE big dogs moved to RAW.
After a great promo with his former partner, Edge, where the "Ultimate Opportunist" turned heel before leaving SD, Christian participated later in the Intercontinental Championship tournament and lost in the finals against Kofi Kingston.
Since then, Christian was dropped to a very low level by WWE. He started appearing with Hornswoggle, and then he jobbed to Dolph Ziggler and "Dashing" Cody Rhodes. He never had a chance to challenge for any title.
However, in his latest match on Smackdown, he was able to pull a surprising win against the supposedly "Chosen One" by Vince McMahon.
I know that Christian is getting old, and that he might not be getting a future world title shot, but WWE really messed with his booking on Smackdown.
7. John Morrison
4 of 14
Arguably, John Morrison was one of the best rising superstars in 2009. He put on numerous five-star matches, and had many memorable feuds.
But ever since he lost in the Elimination Chamber PPV, he has been rolling down the hill very fast. He paired with R-Truth and lost in a semi-squash match against team ShoMiz at Wrestlemania 26.
Apart from the continuous great in-ring skills he showed during his matches, we haven't seen any major thing from the "Shaman of Sexy" since then.
The only great achievement he made was defeating Jack Swagger who was the World Heavyweight Champion at that time in a non-title match on Smackdown.
However, this win meant nothing for him, and looked pointless. Morrison lost to Swagger later on RAW.
Just when everybody thought that moving to RAW could be the right thing for him, Morrison was moved with most top WWE superstars who even harmed him more.
Ironically, he lost in his farewell SD match against Cody "wasn't dashing at that time" Rhodes.
Nowadays, he's seen participating in filler matches, and jobbing in singles to Miz and Ted Dibiase, and in tag-team matches to Nexus.
So, the superstar who was so close to capture a World Title is now barely winning in the mid-card level.
I'm not sure about WWE's expectations for Morrison, but the guy has great skills, and it was unfair to drop him this way.
6. Evan Bourne
5 of 14
Three months ago, John Cena announced Evan Bourne as the substitute superstar for Randy Orton in the tag-team main-event on Monday night RAW.
The high flying superstar was able to pin Sheamus after an impressive Shooting Star Press.
Remember the buzz going around after this episode? Remember how everybody here started making their predictions about the future world titles Evan might be winning soon?
With all these predictions, I was one of the few people who never saw this as a main-event push. However, after beating Y2J, I thought for a while that WWE proved me wrong.
Well, not for long. Evan Bourne currently went back to jobbing.
So, what was WWE's purpose behind those pushes? Why did they have him make such magnificent wins?
No one will ever know what is in WWE's officials' minds. It's not the first time they hype for someone, just to drop him quickly.
5. The Usos
6 of 14
I know that I'm supposed to talk about superstars individually, but the Usos are still one team, so I don't think it's wrong to pick them both.
Do you still remember the Usos' debut? Remember how they put down the Hart Dynasty members and hit them with top rope splashes?
Remember how WWE made us think they are finally caring for their tag team division?
The Usos debuted on Superstars and defeated Goldust & Mark Henry. They were looking good.
Three days later, they made their PPV debut at Fatal Four Way in a losing effort against the Hart Dynasty in a six-man mixed tag team match.
Later, after three weeks of back-and-forth segments, the Usos were able to defeat the Hart Dynasty in a Fatal Four Way rematch.
This made the Usos challenge them for the Tag Team titles. The match took place at Money In The Bank PPV, and the Usos failed to capture the title.
Till now, nothing major here. We're watching a good feud. But what did WWE do next?
The Usos completely disappeared from the Tag Team title scene and they barely made appearances, with an exception of a singles match for Jey Uso.
On the last RAW episode, they finally wrestled in a tag-team match against Vladimir Koslov and Santino Marella in a losing effort.
Well, it seems we're having a new feud here, right?
WRONG! The whole thing was just to go on with a storyline where Tamina is having a crush on Santino!
That's WWE for you. They're building a tag-team feud based on a love story. Nothing wrong with that, but the Hart Dynasty still needs contenders to face for the titles.
Way to go WWE in building your tag teams! Those are your Anoa'i family members with their chaotic booking.
WWE gave me the feeling they regretted the fact that they introduced the Usos.
4. Drew McIntyre
7 of 14
When I watch McIntyre, the first question that comes to my mind would be, “Is he still the Chosen One by Vince McMahon?"
What happened to the superstar who was able to cancel all his losses with a signed paper? What happened to the superstar who was able to keep the Intercontinental Championship with one paper signed by VKM?
What happened to the superstar who seemed to be running the Smackdown show for a while? In other words, what happened to the "Chosen One?"
Could his visa issue have something to do with his recent de-push?
McIntyre was able to beat Morrison and win the Intercontinental Title. Since then, he had a decent undefeated streak till it finally ended against Kane.
But McMahon gave him a signed paper that said he didn't lose. It was again done after losing to Matt Hardy, until he finally lost to the Undertaker.
Later, he was stripped of his Intercontinental title, just to reclaim it again, after yet another signed paper by VKM.
However, he lost his title against Kofi Kingston at Over The Limit. Since then, things have completely changed for the supposedly "Chosen One."
He went on feuding with Matt Hardy in several matches with a different result each time. He was owned by Theodore Long who sent him off due to visa expiration.
After his return, he had nothing major other than another loss to Rey Mysterio.
He lost in his latest match against Christian who is a current mid-card, before crushing Matt Hardy after the match, again and again. He didn't even wrestle in the biggest event of the summer!
I'm still confused about McIntyre. Honestly speaking, with all the hype he had as the chosen one, he never had a major achievement, even when he was the Intercontinental champion.
Anyway, what do you think really happened to the Scottish superstar? Will we see him rise or fall?
Fun question: Did Tiffany beat him hard to the extent he’s not able to wrestle anymore?
I only added him here, because I thought that the hype he had as the chosen one deserved more than what he received, and I can't believe that a chosen one by Mr. McMahon as future champion could be treated like this.
It seems WWE are really lost with his booking at the moment. His career may have not been ruined, but the hype has been destroyed for sure.
3. Jack Swagger
8 of 14
Swagger's recent booking by WWE is one of the weirdest I've ever seen in a long time. He was one of the main reasons I created this slide show.
Have you ever seen a World Heavyweight Champion jobbing? If your answer is no, then probably you never watched Swagger's pathetic World Title reign.
After winning the money in the bank ladder match at Wrestlemania 26, he quickly cashed his contract against Y2J on Smackdown and won his first World Title. I say first because I don't consider the ECW title as a world title.
Since then, he had one of the weirdest title reigns ever. He was able to win two title matches cleanly.
But in return, he went on a ridiculous losing streak in non-title singles matches and tag team matches against John Morrison, Kofi Kingston and Rey Mysterio.
He still managed some few wins against Morrison (rematch) and MVP.
He was destroyed by Big Show during their feud, and he couldn't even pull a win over him.
Rather than pushing him as a fighting champion, he was fed to other wrestlers. What a great champion you were, Swagger.
Finally, he lost his World Heavyweight Championship at Fatal Four Way ending his three months reign as a champion.
After his loss, Swagger started looking fiercer. He took out Big Show and Rey Mysterio with his ankle lock.
Really? Where were those snaps when he was a Champion? But no worries this; didn't last for long.
Now here's why I added him to the list.
Swagger lost his rematch to Mysterio (who dropped the title to Kane on the same night) in a great match at Money In The Bank. He lost again to Mysterio in a number one contender's match one night after MITB.
Later, after yet another match against Mysterio, which ended with Swagger thrown in the Gulf of Mexico, he was nowhere to be found.
Once he made his first appearance after two weeks, he lost to the current WWE ultimate jobber MVP!
He couldn't even make it to Summerslam. Now he's making appearances on the D-Show, WWE Superstars, where he barely won against Chris Masters.
Does this mean he's being dropped to the low mid-card section? Is this how WWE build a future superstar?
Why did they elevate him so quickly if they were planning to drop him back?
I know that Swagger is still young and could have many better moments in the future.
But that World Title didn't help much in building his career, and the way he went down after dropping the title would even harm any momentum left.
That’s another messy booking by WWE.
2. Chris Jericho
9 of 14
Before I start, I'm aware what people here think about Y2J. He's the only superstar who can jump from the main event scene to the mid-card section without losing credibility.
As much as I agree with this statement, I still think that WWE went a bit far this year. The self proclaimed "Best at what he does" seems doing nothing other than losing and jobbing in a very strange maneuver these days.
Even if he has no problem in elevating other talents, how about doing it in a logical way. I mean even Edge and Randy Orton could sometimes lose, but they never dropped to the level of Jericho in losing.
I know that it's not the first time we see Jericho lose to mid-cards, but again, I still think that this year was completely different.
Jericho was just headlining Wrestlemania 26 couple of months ago. He even came out victorious after a hard fought battle against Edge.
Later, he dropped his title in few days to Jack Swagger after cashing in his Money in the Bank contract.
After losing in a triple threat match to Swagger, and then losing at Extreme Rules against Edge, Jericho was drafted to RAW.
Since then, Jericho had one of his worst runs in WWE. He lost in his Smackdown farewell match to Kofi Kingston.
Then, after winning in a singles match against David Hart Smith, he lost against the Hart Dynasty with Miz as his partner and failed to capture the Tag-Team Championships.
Later, he was defeated by Evan Bourne in Fatal Four Way before winning in a rematch on RAW.
He became part of the WWE team against Nexus, and after some hesitation, he finally agreed to join in. No need to say that he lost some single and tag team matches during this time.
Even his elimination at Summerslam during the match against Nexus was no more than a joke.
Finally, he was the only member of team WWE to lose cleanly against a Nexus member in a singles match. I know that Morrison and R-Truth lost cleanly too, but that was a tag-team match.
After all those losses, Jericho now is back to the World Title scene. But he's only part of a Six-Pack Challenge match. I think his chances of winning the title are very low. But who knows?
I added Jericho to the mix because I never liked to see him as the underdog.
Unlike many superstars in this slideshow, Jericho is one of the greatest superstars in WWE, and you can't treat a veteran this way, even if it was for the sake of elevating others.
Again, I say that it's not the first time we see Jericho pushing other talents. But this year I felt that he's jobbing more than just pushing talents, especially that he came out victorious at the biggest event of sports entertainment few months ago.
Y2J shouldn’t be remembered only for jobbing in his final years.
1. Straight Edge Society
10 of 14
"One nation under Punk, with sobriety and integrity for all."
Those words were supposed to be the emblem of a promising stable called the "Straight Edge Society."
I know that you're all asking why I added a whole stable rather one superstar.
The answer is simple. All those superstars were horribly booked, and I couldn't exclude any of them.
This stable went from being the best and most promising stable since Evolution, to possibly becoming the worst stable in WWE history, unless some serious changes are done.
I've written an article about Serena's release and SES future. So I'm not touching this issue here.
Do I need to say anything about this stable? Just anybody looking at the photo on the left will surely feel that this could be the stable of the decade.
And who's better than the Straight Edge superstar and the three-time former World Champion CM Punk to lead such a stable?
Among the rare gimmick stables, SES could have easily stood out as the best in the 21st century.
The stable was all about members saved by Punk, so they can live a better life with no smoking, no alcohol, and no drugs.
He was playing his role perfectly and he added some promising members who could have easily shined with the stable and help Punk become more dominant in WWE.
In other words, WWE created big hype for this stable for a reason, right?
WRONG!
After few weeks of creation, the stable went on declining in an illogical and incomprehensible way.
Luke Gallows won few squash matches before he started jobbing in singles and tag team matches with Punk. He was even treated horribly by the leader of the group.
Serena was doing nothing more than moving around with the members and watching them lose and get embarrassed in the ring. Not to mention that she also got embarrassed by CM Punk at a certain point.
Just when she finally wrestled her first match, she was released few days later because of discipline issues.
Joey Mercury was fine with his mask, and just when everybody got used to it, he lost it after being crushed by Big Show.
As for Punk, the stable never helped him. First, he got his head shaved by Rey Mysterio after a feud that had matches with weird stipulations. However, he wore a mask to cover his face.
Just when we thought he would finally rise after he was added to the World Title match, he broke his hand, and then lost the mask later.
Finally, he lost against the Big Show, even though he had two partners with him.
Since their formation, the stable has been going on a horrible losing streak in singles and tag-team matches.
CM Punk hasn’t had any serious match or feud since then. This stable should have helped him rise, and not turn into a joke.
The booking of SES could be simply described as a mess. There was no reason not to allow this stable to dominate or at least be more credible.
Now, after this, Punk will need a lot of time before he could be taken as a serious and credible contender again.
As for the rest of the group, the stable was supposed to push them. But instead they had their careers ruined until now.
I'm not sure what's next for SES, but I can fairly say that the booking of this stable was one of the worst in WWE history.
Honorable Mentions
11 of 14
The Nexus: The whole Nexus segment was great, and the group looked promising. But in the end, they lost. Even though their loss wasn't a good start for them, but I didn't add them to the list, because they're still rookies, and we should begin judging them from now based on individual performance.
MVP: Honestly speaking, I wasn't going to add him to the list. But his last win over Jack Swagger made me scratch my head and wonder whether this was meant to be a push for him or a bump for Swagger.
Ezekiel Jackson: He won the ECW title in the last ECW episode. That's enough. He's still out until now.
Rey Mysterio: His World Title win at Fatal Four Way was supposed to be a big deal. But instead, WWE turned the reign into a joke. Other than this, nothing major here.
Randy Orton: He's been in the main-event for quite a while by now. But his PPV records has been horrible since 2009, with three wins only out of eleven.
Kofi Kingston: What happened to the crazy reaction he showed after losing the Intercontinental Championship to Dolph Ziggler?
Edge: Whatever happened to the Rated “R” Superstar and the nine-time World Champion?
Sheamus: No need to talk about his World Title reigns.
Curt Hawkins and Vance Archer, "The Gatecrashers": They're rising on SD, but I'm still waiting for them to get a Tag Team Title match, or at least enter in a legit feud.
Special WWE Diva Mention: Maryse
12 of 14
I know that the Divas Division is not in its best days. But since the WWE roster has males and females, I thought that I could mention one diva.
After checking all the divas, I decided to choose Maryse for several reasons.
Before I start, I’m sure most of us agree that Maryse's ring skills can easily be described as below average to say the least. However, we do agree that she has great character with awesome mic skills.
I've added Maryse because WWE turned her from a top contender for the divas title to a valet in a very short time.
I'm sure many people here believe that she fits better in this role. But this diva is the longest reigning Diva's champion. WWE made her look dominant during those days.
She beat the likes of Michelle McCool and Gail Kim. She used to get more time on the mic and commentary. She was over with the fans, even though she was heel. I'm sure that had her ring skills been better, she could have been one of the best divas in WWE.
However, she was dropped to a valet in a weird way, and we've never seen her in a title match since her last loss to Eve.
Now she's the personal assistant of Ted DiBiase Jr.
Probably they paired them together because it's obvious that DiBiase has no character, while Maryse's toenail alone possesses more personality than he has in his whole body.
I added her, because WWE seemed to be having some plans for her when she started, but they either dropped them or they never had anything in mind.
Still, dropping her from a top contender to a valet in this way wasn't done perfectly, even if this could be the best role for her.
Anyway, I’m sure this is not really harmful for her, but I'm only saying that WWE shouldn’t have made her so dominant in the first place.
As for the rest of the divas, there’s nothing major about them. They’re either valets or normal contenders.
Other Divas I could have added: Jillian, Natalya.
Final Thoughts
13 of 14
I know that the concept of this slide show could look a bit irrelevant and illogical, but I do hope you understood the purpose of it.
I only tried to show you how WWE can sometimes look lost while booking a certain superstar.
You might think that this is one of many mistakes done by WWE, but it's not a major problem.
However, I disagree with this. Booking superstars should be carefully dealt with, and messing with it could really harm the credibility of the built superstar.
You can't make someone who was dominating look very weak in a very short time and still convince the audience with what you did.
You can't hype for someone as a future big thing in WWE just for the sake of filling promos.
I'm only trying to say that such bookings could really be harmful for the superstars' careers.
So, what do you think? Was this slide show worth it? Did you understand the concept behind it? Was it good to mention this here? Or do you think you just wasted your time?
Again I say that it wasn't very easy to choose the superstars, as I tried to add them based on how harmed their careers were because of WWE's messy booking.
But if you have other choices in mind, please feel free to tell me about them. After all, everybody could see this differently.
All thoughts and comments are welcome.
