Real Madrid Finally Accept Defeat, Ronaldo To Stay At United

Jeff HarbertAug 5, 2008

The long and seemingly never-ending transfer saga involving Cristiano Ronaldo, seems to finally be over.

What a relief.

I was beginning to wonder if it would ever end! And I must admit, Iโ€™m absolutely sick and tired of all the news regarding his future.

I hope it makes you as happy as it does for me to know that we wonโ€™t have to see the name Ronaldo hogging all the headlines anymore; at least for the same reason it has been in the past few months.

Iโ€™m sure that once heโ€™s back from his injury and playing in a United jersey again, weโ€™ll see some similar headlines as to what we saw all last season.

Roman Caledron, Real Madridโ€™s president, has all, but given up hope in signing Ronaldo this summer.

As Caledron introduced his newest, and only summer signing, Rafael Van der Vaart to the a crowd of fans inside the Bernabeau, he admitted the Dutchman would probably be the clubโ€™s only signing this month.

โ€œVan der Vaart is the first signing and probably the only one,โ€ Caledron said.

Despite Real Madridโ€™s active pursuit of Ronaldo all summer, Manchester United has remained firm over their โ€œnot for saleโ€ stance.

After Caledron finally accepted defeat in capturing Ronaldo, Sir Alex Ferguson announced the transfer saga was finally over.

"The matter is closed now," said Ferguson on Sky Sports News. โ€œHe is a Manchester United player, it's finished. He is going to play here believe me."

This is good news for Manchester United fans, as well as all those who couldnโ€™t wait for the transfer debachle to finally come to an end.

Itโ€™s not a happy ending for Real Madrid, but at least the Spanish Champions have a whole year to plan how they are going to lure Ronaldo away from Old Trafford next year when the transfer market reopens in the summer.

Until then, letโ€™s enjoy the โ€œRonaldo-lessโ€ headlines and focus on the new season which is rapidly approaching over the horizon.
