2010 College Football Predictions: Boise St.'s Biggest Test Comes Week 1
Boise State Broncos last year had an unforgettable season going 14-0. Many people believed that this team deserved to be part of the national title picture.
Texas and Alabama took care of business and the Broncos were never part of the equation. That was last year, and now Chris Peterson head coach of Boise State returns a bunch of talent on both sides of the ball.
To be specific the Bronco's return ten starters on offense and ten starters on defense. This team has experience and the talent to make another run at an undefeated season.
Ever since they defeated Oklahoma on the famous statue of liberty two point conversion in 2006 this team has jumped into the national spotlight. People are waiting for a mid-major type program such as Boise State to finally have a shot at the BCS Championship.
This is the year 2010 and the team that could potentially do the unthinkable. Boise State is a big-time college football program and with the impending move from the WAC to the Mountain West set to take place in July 2011, this is the Broncos real last chance.
Boise State on offense is going to score points in bunches. The one starter they lost was on the offensive line. That means opposing defenses better be ready for everything that the Broncos throw at them.
Kellen Moore is back for his Junior year. Moore last season threw a career high 39 touchdowns to only 3 interceptions. His pinpoint accuracy and strong arm is how Boise State is so effective in the passing game.
He is also throwing the ball to two of the best wide receivers out there. Austin Pettis and Titus Young are both quick and athletic.
When there are speedsters on both sides of the field, there is no telling what's coming at you.
Jeremy Avery, D.J Harper, and Doug Martin are a three-headed monster at running back. This group has it all. Each of the three bring a different speciality whether it is speed, strength, or overall versatility.
The Broncos can hit quick with all three depending who is getting the ball. Having so many dangerous weapons on offense makes scoring points easier.
The one big loss at cornerback and punt returner is Kyle Wilson. Wilson was an explosive punt returner and shutdown cover corner on the team's best wideout. He is going to be missed, but can be replaced.
Whoever replaces him will have their hands full week one when Boise State plays Virginia Tech in Landover, Maryland on Labor Day night.
A matchup of teams that are both predicted to be part of the Preseason Top 10. There's no doubt about it this game has national title implications for both teams.
It is definitely an elimination game for Boise State and more or less along the same line for Va. Tech.
Talk about pressure. Boise State proved its critics wrong with a 17-10 stellar win against TCU in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl.
Now Chris Peterson and his group of players are focused on getting back to Glendale, Arizona this time to compete for a BCS Championship.
It will only be there if the chips fall their way. That includes beating Va. Tech week one and winning every game on their schedule.
Boise State's linebackers better be prepared to face one of the toughest running attacks in the country when they play Virginia Tech. Tech loves to pound the ball up the middle and can rack up yards on the ground.
The Broncos realize the importance of their season-opener.
Everything is on the line. Kellen Moore and company know that they have to win if they want any shot at playing for a national title come January.
With that being said, Frank Beamer realizes that his team has to beat Boise State. It's a great out-of-conference opportunity to prove what Virginia Tech and the ACC is all about.
Nevertheless, the winner of this game will have a lot of confidence going into the rest of the season.
Chris Peterson and the Broncos will find a way to leave Maryland 1-0.
He has to. This team returns too much talent and strength to lose week one.
Then again, Virginia Tech is a very good football team. Either way this is the highly most anticipated match-up that has been talked about since last year.
Broncos versus Hokies. If Boise State wants to remain a national title contender it will win on Labor Day night.
That's exactly what it comes down to.
