Is the Old Adage: Defense Wins Championships Still True?
We have all heard it before, defense wins championships, however do the number back this up.
The main statistic I used to judge this is the use of offensive and defensive rating which is defined
Offensive Rating = (points produced / possessions) x 100 or basically how many points a team produces per 100 possessions.
Defensive Rating = (points allowed / possession) x 100 or basically how many points a team allows per 100 possessions.
The reason for using these two statistic is that it help show efficiency.
For example, the Warriors were ranked #2 in offensive last year averaging 108.8 ppg however, there offensive rating is ranked 14th in the league. The reason being is that while they do score a lot of points, they also take more shots than other teams making them less efficient.
In contrast, Portland, who was ranked 21st in the league with 98.1 ppg, is ranked 7th in offensive rating making them a more efficient scoring team then the Warriors despite averaging few points.
Offensive and Defensive ratings helps ignore the fact that teams play at different paces and take different amounts of shots which makes it a more ideal statistic to use.
Below is a chart of the past champions and where they rank in off. and def. rating.
Year | Team | Off. Rating | Off. Rank | Def. Rating | Def. Rank |
2009-2010 | LAL | 108.8 | 11th | 103.7 | 4th |
2008-2009 | LAL | 112.8 | 3rd | 104.7 | 6th |
2007-2008 | BOS | 110.2 | 10th | 98.9 | 1st |
2006-2007 | SA | 109.2 | 5th | 99.9 | 2nd |
2005-2006 | MIA | 108.7 | 7th | 104.5 | 9th |
2004-2005 | SA | 107.5 | 8th | 98.8 | 1st |
2003-2004 | DET | 102 | 18th | 95.4 | 2nd |
2002-2003 | SA | 105.6 | 7th | 99.7 | 3rd |
2001-2002 | LAL | 109.4 | 2nd | 101.7 | 7th |
2000-2001 | LAL | 108.4 | 2nd | 104.8 | 21st |
1999-2000 | LAL | 107.3 | 5th | 98.2 | 1st |
1998-1999 | SA | 104 | 11th | 95 | 1st |
1997-1998 | CHI | 107.7 | 9th | 99.8 | 3rd |
1996-1997 | CHI | 114.4 | 1st | 102.4 | 4th |
1995-1996 | CHI | 115.2 | 1st | 101.8 | 1st |
1994-1995 | HOU | 109.7 | 7th | 107.4 | 12th |
1993-1994 | HOU | 105.9 | 15th | 101.4 | 2nd |
1992-1993 | CHI | 112.9 | 2nd | 106.1 | 7th |
1991-1992 | CHI | 115.5 | 1st | 104.5 | 4th |
As you can see there is slightly more variation in the off. rating of teams then there is for def. rating. In addition, aside from the 94-95 HOU and 00-01 LAL, there is no championship team that ranks outside the top 10 in defense rating while there are 5 teams ranked outside top 10 for off. rating.
However, will this trend continue?
The average team points per game for the league has been slowly going up every year, from a league average of 93.4 in 03-04 to 100.4 last season.
While the old adage "Defense wins championships" still seems true today, will it still hold it's ground in the future?
