New NBA Rumors Reveal Damian Lillard's Impact on Blazers' HC Search, Latest Tiago Splitter Buzz

Andrew PetersMay 7, 2026

As the Portland Trail Blazers continue their extensive search for a new head coach, Damian Lillard reportedly is offering up his advice.

Per NBA insider Jake Fischer, the franchise icon "has indeed lobbed in some suggestions for the coaching search." Fischer also noted that while interim head coach Tiago Splitter is being considered for the job, he is "unlikely" to get it.

According to Fischer, the Blazers hope to interview "upwards of 30 coaches for the role," with the list ranging from those already in the NBA to "across the sport of basketball."

One such name expected to draw interest is Steve Hetzel, who is currently an assistant coach with the Brooklyn Nets. Hetzel was in Portland from 2021 to 2024, so he spent two seasons alongside Lillard.

Fischer also pegged Denver Nuggets assistant coach Jared Dudley as a possible candidate. Dudley, who retired from his playing career in 2021, was an assistant with the Dallas Mavericks from 2021 to last season and joined the Nuggets ahead of the 2025-26 campaign.

Splitter did well after he was unexpectedly thrust into his first NBA head coaching gig. The Blazers finished the year 42-40, reaching the playoffs for the first time in five seasons.

"There's a lot of talking right now, and I think some of them are exaggerations, clickbait and stuff like that," Splitter told reporters about his future with the team. "I have a good relationship with Tom (Dundon), with Joe (Cronin). We just need some time, now.

"And I understand. It's a new owner. He's trying to figure out us as well, learn what we do, what we do wrong and good, and I guess he needs some time as part of it."

Portland certainly seems to be casting a wide net when it comes to its coaching search, so it could be a while before it lands on a candidate. In the meantime, the front office will look to put together a strong offseason to keep the Blazers relevant after a strong season.
