County Championship Division Two Cricket Update
Surrey were the only county to win in the latest round of Division Two fixtures as the other three matches ended in draws. Sussex's draw against bottom of the table Middlesex keeps them on top with 146 points.
The Hove-based outfit have won five, drawn three, and lost two matches this season.
Sussex batted first at Uxbridge and piled on 452 thanks to Luke Wright's 134 from 122 balls while Toby Roland-Jones took 4-100 in only his third first class match.
Middlesex replied with 350 as Eoin Morgan and John Simpson hit 58, but were restricted by Corey Colleymore's 4-66.
Sussex declared at 240-9 setting Middlesex a tough target of 343 for victory.
The home side just held on, finishing on 204-8, with Morgan (58 from 137 balls) and Steven Finn (0 from 35 balls) unbeaten despite Monty Panesar's 5-89.
Glamorgan are second on 135 points, winning five, drawing two, and losing three after their draw with Leicestershire at Swansea.
The away side batted first but collapsed from 201-2 to 247 all out, Jacques du Toit scoring 75.
Glamorgan's reply of 290 was held together by Mark Cosgrove's 117 as Claude Henderson took 5-72.
Leicestershire reached 221-6 in their second innings before a draw was agreed.
Gloucestershire slip to third on 130 points, winning five, drawing one, and losing four.
Northamptonshire are fourth on 126 points, winning five, drawing one, and losing four after being hammered by Surrey at Kensington Oval.
Surrey amassed 620-7 as Mark Ramprakash (238), Rory Hamilton-Brown (103) and Matthew Spriegel (103) filled their boots. Elton Chigumbura was the only bowler to return decent figures with 4-100.
Northamptonshire could only post 240 first time around as Gareth Batty took 5-76 and fell from 96-0 to 205 all out second time around to give Surrey the win by an innings and 175 runs.
Leicestershire are fifth on 118 points, winning four, drawing two, and losing four after their draw with Glamorgan.
Surrey move up to sixth on 110 points, winning three, drawing three, and losing four after their thumping win over Northamptonshire.
Worcestershire are seventh with 109 points, winning three, drawing four, and losing two after their draw with Derbyshire at Derby.
The away side were grateful for debutant Shakib Al-Hasan (90) and James Cameron (89) in their score of 279.
Greg Smith hit 91 in the home side's reply of 405 as Al-Hasan took 3-94.
Worcestershire faired better with the bat the second time around as Alexei Kerveze's 155 helped his side to 328-6, as nine bowlers were used, with the match falling away to a draw.
Derbyshire stay eighth with 92 points, winning two, drawing three, and losing five after their latest draw.
Middlesex stay bottom but claw a point back on Derbyshire to move level on 92 points, winning two, drawing three, and losing six.
The next round of fixtures, July 29-August 1, sees Leicestershire host Sussex, Middlesex play Surrey, and Worcestershire against Northamptonshire.
Gloucestershire against Glamorgan runs from July 30-August 2.
