UFC 121: Gabriel Gonzaga vs. Brendan Schaub, Not a Go, But in the Works
If someone answers my headline emphatically with a yes, then I'm pretty much convinced that UFC 121 is going to go down as one of the year's most stacked cards.
First, Brock Lesnar and Cain Velasquez make it official, then Court McGee and Ryan Jensen put their bout in the works, and then you've got Middleweight battles left and right which are slated for the card.
Patrick Cote is supposed to face Tom Lawlor, and TUF 11 member Chris Camozzi is supposed to welcome Chan Sung Jung's training partner Dongi "The Ox" Yang into the Octagon.
On top of that, you've got Sam Stout slated to face Paul Taylor and "The Hitman" Martin Kampmann will be the official one-man welcoming committee for the sport's hottest free agent, Jake Shields.
Now in the works for the epic event in Anaheim, California is a heavyweight bout between TUF 10 finalist Brendan "The Hybrid" Schaub and former UFC Heavyweight title contender Gabriel "Napao" Gonzaga.
Both men have a common victim in Chris "The Crowbar" Tuchscherer, with Schaub's victory over the Rugby-born heavyweight at UFC 116. But while Schaub is coming off of the Tuchscherer win, Gonzaga is coming off of a loss that actually followed his win over "The Crowbar".
A former contender to Randy Couture's UFC Heavyweight Belt and the man commonly praised for knocking out Cro Cop with a head kick, Gonzaga will be coming off of a loss to Junior Dos Santos at the UFC's very first "Live on Versus" card this past March.
On the prelims of the same card that the Muay Thai and BJJ Black Belt lost to the Black House heavyweight phenom, Schaub scored a win over Chase Gromley, in what was Schaub's first win since suffering his first career loss at The Ultimate Fighter's 10th season finale to the man who faces Dos Santos in two weeks in Oakland, Roy Nelson.
A boxer and BJJ Purple Belt, Schaub is unquestionably a prospect in the heavyweight division and a name that gets lost in a division loaded with talent the likes of Stefan Struve, Cain Velasquez, Dos Santos, Shane Carwin, and of course the reinvigorated UFC Heavyweight king Brock Lesnar.
Should this fight ever rest in dried ink on the UFC 121 fight card, a fight with Gonzaga would be a solid opportunity for "The Hybrid" to cement his spot in the UFC's largest weight class.
