Liverpool's Quick Transition Period
There are many observers who think Roy Hodgson is a stop-gap measure as Liverpool manager. Employed as a safe pair of hands after a disastrous season, he has the authority and Premier League experience to keep the club on an even keel while it sorts out its ownership and ground issues.
However, the former Fulham boss is more than just a seat-warmer for a big European name to come in when things have settled and transfer funds are again available. Hodgson has a talented squad at his disposal, the core of which were challenging for the league title two seasons ago.
Added to that squad is the name of Joe Cole. The former Chelsea man has given the Reds a major boost by choosing them despite the lack of Champions League football - he obviously sees something else at Anfield aside from the £90,000 a week wages.
Ok, Liverpool's Premier League betting doesn't suggest they'll win the title this season, but they look to be improving.
Cole gives Liverpool a creative edge they lacked last season and if Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres can be retained Hodgson suddenly has an exciting front three to rival everyone in the division. Fellow summer signing Milan Jovanovic brings more attacking flair to a midfield whose donkey work will again be done by Javier Mascherano and Dirk Kuyt.
Not a lot of pundits will make Liverpool betting tips this term, but if they can keep key players fit then they should be alright.
The defence should look after itself with a bit of reorganisation that Hodgson is famed for and whilst another title challenge is too much to expect, Liverpool will be stronger than many envisage. Hodgson will be at Anfield for the long haul, unless England come calling.
