Welterweight War II: Chris Lytle-Matt Serra Rematch To Happen at UFC 119

Dale De SouzaJul 10, 2010

UFC 119's Frank Mir-Minotauro Nogueira battle won't be the only explosive rematch that fight fans will get to see when the UFC makes its debut in Indianapolis.

Confirmed earlier today was the news that Chris "Lights Out" Lytle will see himself in a rematch against a familiar opponent at UFC 119.

The opponent? Matt "The Terror" Serra.

Fans who have never seen either Serra or Lytle in action will be in for a treat.

The only real difference between Lytle and Serra is that Lytle has some good wrestling to his credit.

Serra, who was last seen in action against Frank Trigg at UFC 109, has fast hands, vicious boxing, and a second-degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under the legendary Renzo Gracie — who despite being a member of one of the most revered families in MMA, has on his record an uninspiring third-round defeat at UFC 112 to Serra's arch-nemesis, Matt Hughes (who holds a unanimous decision win over Lytle, by the way).

The last time fans saw Serra at all, however, was honing the BJJ skills of "The Outlaw" Dan Hardy in preparation for Hardy's UFC 111 encounter with Georges St-Pierre.

Meanwhile, The "bonus taker" of the UFC in six fights, Lytle will be coming off the second "Submission Of The Night" bonus of his career following his war with Matt "The Immortal" Brown, which ended in a sickening trainglechoke/straight armbar submission in round two of the fight.

Lytle's first go-around with Serra was at the Ultimate Fighter 4 Finale. The two, both members of Team Mojo, were the final two welterweights and thus met in the finals to decide not only the Season Four winner in the Welterweight Division, but also the next contender to the UFC welterweight title.

Their bout was an exciting three round affair that ended in a split decision win for Serra.

You can view the fight here.

Serra said before the fight that Lytle was good on the ground and the feet, so endurance would be the key for him in the previous fight.

Still, that was the previous fight.

Lytle and Serra have come a long way from that fight.

It's a whole new ball game, and both men have evolved as fighters since the fourth season of The Ultimate Fighter.

Chris Lytle could either knock out or submit Serra, just like Serra could knock out or submit Lytle.

Then again, endurance could be a factor in this fight just as it was for the first fight between "Lights Out" and "The Terror"

The way I see it, there may not be a way to pick a definite winner in the rematch until we the fans are able to see the training and preparation that both men will be going through in order to get ready for the fight.

Prediction: This one's going to prove itself to be a "Fight of the Night" candidate
