Athletes Shouldn't Come Back From Retirement
Professional athletes who get on TV and announce their retirements should stay retired.
However, when they're out of competition for a while, they feel that urge to jump back into the game.
We can name many athletes from different sports who announced their retirement, only to come back.
Brett Favre said he was done with football in 2008. He was bored in Mississippi riding on a John Deere lawn tractor while wearing Wrangler jeans. To him, it was about some unfinished business.
Favre screwed up the Packers' chances of making their third Super Bowl with him as their quarterback, losing to the New York Giants in overtime.
So, he wanted to redeem himself, playing for a New York Jets team that missed the playoffs.
Minnesota's chances of a Super Bowl trip didn't happen because of Favre's mistakes in the second half against New Orleans.
I guess he wants to go out with a bang in his 20th season, if he decides to come back, once again.
There are mixed results and disasters when athletes retire, then change their minds.
Sugar Ray Leonard retired probably 10 times. He gave it the ol' college try for the last time, and lost bad to Ray Norris, out of all people. I'm sure my boxing fans will correct me if I'm wrong.
Michael Jordan retired twice with the Chicago Bulls. After his first three-peat, he tried baseball. We all know what a disaster that was for the two years he was away from the hoops.
When Jordan came back, the Bulls won three more titles. If Jordan would've stayed the other two years, the Bulls could've won eight in a row. His last go-around in the NBA, after retiring a second time with the Wizards, didn't end quite that well.
Magic Johnson felt that he was forced to retire after contracting HIV. The pressure for Johnson to retire was increasing because some of the players didn't want to play against him. Then Johnson tried it again with the Lakers, but the magic was gone.
I believe Muhammad Ali retired once and tried to make a comeback, which didn't go his way either.
Lance Armstrong retired after winning seven consecutive Tour de France races. He then took some time off and rode in the Tour last year, and is now competing in this year's race.
Didn't Tiger Woods retire recently?
Ooops, sorry Tiger. I thought you retired yourself after Elin almost clubbed you with a nine iron.
Floyd Mayweather reportedly retired a second time, or at least until he's bored and money hungry to fight again.
I can't come up with other athletes who tried to come back from retirement.
What I like about some former pro athletes was when they announced their retirement, they stayed retired.
