Fedor's Fall: Lesnar vs. Carwin Takes on Huge Importance

Jon LeeJun 29, 2010

When Fedor tapped out against Fabricio Werdum on Saturday night, the repercussions could almost instantly be felt—especially in the Heavyweight Division of The UFC.

Besides Dana White nearly knocking himself out doing back flips, Fedor's failure adds a ton of interest and importance to this Saturday's massive (literally and figuratively) Heavyweight collision.

The fight is being billed as the BIGGEST collision in UFC history, and in terms of size it certainly is. Brock Lesnar is a monster of a man, weighing around 300 lbs. Shane Carwin is almost as big and seems to be the only man capable of coming near Brock's awesome strength.

Lesnar hasn't fought since he destroyed Frank Mir last year, due to contracting a crazy hard to pronounce intestinal disease. He says he's close to 100% for this fight, and as he has said multiple times, he still has the real HW belt.

Lesnar, when healthy, is a game changer like Shaq in the early 2000s. He simply distorts the fight game with his amazing size, speed, and strength. He is a wrestler by trade, but has shown a preference for ending his fights with booming punches followed by hammer fists from the top position.

Shane Carwin is undefeated through 12 fights in the Octagon. If you're reading this you've probably already heard that he's undefeated, and none of his fights have made it out of the first round. He's an incredibly powerful striker, and a Division II champion college wrestler.

Carwin has won every single one of his fights by KO or TKO, making him seem more like a video game character than a real fighter.

Lesnar lost just once, when Frank Mir caught him in a leg lock early in his career. Besides his obvious physical advantages such as size, speed, and agility, he's also a former Division I champion wrestler and all over ornery, nasty dude.

One thing that struck me after the Mir/Carwin fight was how much bigger Lesnar looked than Carwin during their stare down in the ring. Lesnar was in a suit and Carwin a t-shirt, but the size difference was noticeable enough that my roommate and I decided that when Shane Carwin's 6'5" listed height is like Tom Cruise saying he's 5'10".

I guess we'll get the final answer to the size question on Friday at weigh-ins .  The strength question will be answered on Saturday.

I'll have my official fight-by-fight breakdown of UFC 116 Thursday.

One thing is for sure, whoever wins this fight is the best Heavyweight fighter in MMA.
