The Top Five Reasons Fedor Emelianenko Will Get a Rematch With Werdum
Many people have discussed what will come next for the WAMMA heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko following his latest defeat. The following are the top five reasons why there will be an immediate rematch with Fabricio Werdum:
1. Strikeforce gave Brett Rogers a title shot following his TKO loss to Fedor
This is an astounding fact and one that shows that sense is not a necessary ingredient when determining who will fight whom in Strikeforce. It was a very confusing and likely unprecedented act that has opened the door at Strikeforce for possibilities that simply would not make sense in other Organizations.
It is this fact that lays the foundation for the reasons that follow in the sense that in Strikeforce anything can happen.
2. Cung Le got a rematch with Scott Smith without having to fight anyone else first
People have complained that Fedor should not get a rematch because he was stopped and it was not a close fight. Cung Le was TKO'd by Smith, which is worse than a submission.
While Cung Le was dominating that fight until he was taken out, Fedor also seemed to be the dominant force until he was suddenly defeated.
Cung Le is a popular fellow, but one could not really say he deserves more consideration than the greatest martial artist of all time.
3. BJ Penn got an immediate rematch with Frankie Edgar
BJ Penn was the UFC lightweight champion and has earned a lot of respect in the MMA world. Because of this he was granted a rematch with Frankie Edgar, the current champion, without having to fight anyone else.
This is a good example because BJ Penn is quoted as saying Fedor is the greatest fighter in the world. If a man like BJ Penn, a UFC champion who has earned the respect of millions, says Fedor is the greatest then maybe it's true.
Shouldn't the greatest fighter in the world get a second chance?
4. Mauricio Rua was given an immediate rematch with Lyoto Machida
Once again, this was a case where a UFC title was on the line. Despite losing to Machida, many felt the fight should have been called a win for Rua. This by itself would not be enough to obtain that fight unless one of theose people happens to be Dana White.
Dana felt there should be a rematch and there was one. It is that simple. Certainly Scott Coker has the same privilege to make such a choice?
It could be said that the rematch with Machida was only possible because it was such a close fight. This is a good point except for the fact that in Rua's case there was a title on the line. Not so in the case of Fedor and Werdum.
5. In the end, it all comes down to money
This is a sobering fact for the executives at Strikeforce.
They only have one fight left before Fedor can take a walk, and they must use it to maximum effect. If you were the chief executive at Strikeforce, would you prefer Fedor fight a guy like Bigfoot or a big money rematch with Werdum?
They need to make as much money as they can if they are going to survive. That money might influence them and their decision goes without saying. No matter what, the bottom line always is the very first consideration of any successful business.
It seems apparent to many that a rematch with Werdum makes the most sense. In addition, if anyone deserves a second chance it would certainly be Fedor Emelianenko.
