David Haye Could Bring Back Heavyweight Division's Dominance in Boxing

Leo ReyesJun 22, 2010

The world boxing heavyweight division has been losing popularity over the years with the retirement of famous heavyweight boxers like Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson, Evander Hollyfield, George Foreman, Joe Frasier, among other heavyweight boxing greats.

These once-popular boxing stars were certified crowd drawers during their time and they all belong to the heavyweight division.

The downfall of the division could be traced to the absence of popular heavyweight boxers who can match the style and skills of these legendary heavyweight fighters.

Fortunately, a new heavyweight boxing sensation has been making waves in the heavyweight division. He is David Haye, a 29-year-old British heavyweight boxer, who only has one loss record in his entire boxing career.

David Haye, who just won over John Ruiz via TKO last April in Manchester, England, has dominated recent heavyweight news headlines when the Klitschko brothers started chasing the British boxer for the heavyweight match that boxing fans would most likely enjoy watching.

A unification fight between Klitschko and David Haye , who currently holds the WBA title, appears to be in the offing, after Klitschko officially called out the Briton.Haye's trainer Adam Booth has indicated that Haye would be willing to accept the challenge.

Both sides are currently in talks and the bout is targeted for September. As the negotiations continue to move forward, the unification fight between Klitschko and Haye is expected to take place in Germany rather than England .

However, while the fight negotiation was underway, David Haye said he wanted to fight the other Klitschko, bother Vitali, instead of Wladimir.

Latest news on David Haye's next fights shows he is fighting Audley Harrison, a virtual unknown, although he was a 2000 Olympic gold medalist but his credential as a professional boxer leaves much to be desired.

Harrison had a losing streak from 2005 after losing to Danny Williams on a split decision and later to Dominick Guinn in 2006. A year later he was knocked out by Michael Sprott for the European union title. Harrison's career is clearly on a downswing and it may not be a good match for Haye.

Haye may be assured of another win by taking on Harrison but the unpopular match- up would be tantamount to ducking the Klitschkos for an easy win over Harrison.

If indeed Haye has opted to face Harrison instead of the very lucrative showdown with any of the Klitschko brothers, the hope of having a British boxer who can dominate the heavyweight division may never become a reality after all.
