WEC Brings the World's Fastest Growing Sport to Edmonton, Alberta

Joshua CareyJun 14, 2010

World Extreme Cagefighting will invade Edmonton, Alberta Canada this Sunday (June 20) for WEC 49.

The card features a main event between former lightweight champion Jamie Varner (16-3-2) and Kamal Shalorus (6-0-1).

The two 155 lb. fighters will battle it out for a potential chance to face current champion Ben Henderson.

Varner's only loss inside of the organization was to Henderson and there is no doubt that Varner would like a chance to re-gain the championship.

However, the task at hand is Shalorus and on the organization's conference call today Varner stated that his opponent is much tougher than he is given credit for.

“I’ve said it before, Kamal is the toughest guy you’ve never heard of. I hope I can get through this fight uninjured and hopefully get back to the title.”

If Varner is successful this Sunday at WEC 49 and walks away uninjured, then he will likely receive the opportunity to get back to the title.

During the call, Brett Okamoto, a sports reporter from the Las Vegas Sun, asked Varner about the reasoning for why he attended the WEC 48 post-fight press conference.

Was it to hear what Henderson had to say after successfully defending his championship, or was he just simply attending the press conference?

“Ben is a good guy, but some of the stuff he does, I think that he thinks he’s a little better than he is," Varner explained.

"I think that guy hit the lottery when he hit that guillotine. He claims he’s from my state and he’s not, he’s from Washington.”

In addition to the lightweight battle that will take place in the main event, Canadian fans will get a treat when two of their own step into the WEC cage.

Featherweight rivals, Yves Jabouin (14-5) and Mark Hominick (17-8) are finally set to square off in a match that has been some eight years in the making.

Jabouin stated on the call that Hominick is someone that he has been watching for quite some time and that he believes it will be a very good fight for the fans.

"I think it’s promising to be a very good fight. It’s going to be very interesting to be fighting in front of Canadian fans. This fight has supposed to been booked for about eight years now. Hominick used to be a star in my hometown and I’ve been watching him forever."

Hominick followed up with his own response on the match-up and it taking place in their home country of Canada, saying:

“You’re going to get two strikers that are going to stand and go at it. It’s been four years since I’ve been able to fight in Canada.”
