Season Standings
1: St. Louis Cardinals (28-16-1) – Even though the Cards have played three straight games beyond the number, they’re still playing consistent baseball towards the ‘under’. The pitching staff has allowed 20 runs over the L/3 days, which has taken the team’s ERA up to 3.07, second in the league. However, if you think that this is going to keep up, remember that 1B Albert Pujols and OF Matt Holliday are only combined to be on a pace to hit about 47 homers between the two of them this year.

2: Baltimore Orioles (27-16-2) – The O’s still aren’t getting great pitching this year, and the bullpen has been shaky, but the offense has just been so woeful that it hasn’t mattered. The MLB odds couldn’t make ‘totals’ low enough for the O’s, who have only combined to post more than ten total runs in a game 13 times all season long.
3: Chicago Cubs (24-14-7) – And to think… The wind was blowing out in Wrigley Field not too long ago! The Cubs haven’t played a game past the number since losing to Pittsburgh 10-6 back on May 14th. Part of the reason for this is that the Chicago pitching staff has amassed more strikeouts than any other team in baseball, averaging 7.8 punch outs per game. Numbers like that will make any manager smile, though if the offense doesn’t stop putting so many donuts on the board, Lou Piniella won’t be happy over anything.
Who’s Hot?
1: Chicago Cubs (5-0-2) – During this stretch of nine straight games without an ‘over’, the Cubs haven’t allowed more than five runs in any game and have only averaged conceding 3.0 runs per game in that stretch. The offense has only topped five runs once in that stretch though, scoring six runs at home against Colorado on the 18th. RHP Tom Gorzelanny was a big reason for the success of the staff, as he threw 6.2 scoreless innings on the 19th, but he left that game with sore left ring finger and he might miss Tuesday’s start.
2: Florida Marlins (4-1-2) – Since getting benched by manager Fredi Gonzalez for not hustling to the outfield on a badly played ball against Arizona, SS Hanley Ramirez has only scored one run. The Fish have been held to two runs or less three times since then as well in a stretch of six straight games without one going past the number. Fortunately for Florida, that all ended on Sunday with a 13-0 win at US Cellular Field, but if the offense struggles like this, it’s going to be a long summer in South Beach.
3: Pittsburgh Pirates (5-2) – Three, two, zero, three, six, two, two, three. What do those numbers have in common? That’s all that the Pittsburgh offense has strung together by game this week. Things just aren’t getting any better for this makeshift lineup, which is now hitting just .237 on the season and is averaging just 3.39 runs per game. Thank goodness that Houston isn’t on the schedule until the beginning of July!
