Diego Milito Leads Inter to First Champions League Title since 1965

Andrew JordanMay 22, 2010

After a 45-year wait, Inter Milan have won their first European Cup title since 1965 with their 2-0 win over Bayern Munich at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid.

In this match, Inter were propelled by a man-of-the-match performance from Diego Milito, who scored both goals in the match, and a great defensive effort all around.

This title also gives Inter the first ever Italian treble, which consists of Serie A, the Coppa Italia, and the UEFA Champions League.

To start off the match, Inter and Bayern started off with counterattacking football on both sides of the pitch, but no one was able to get any shots on target.

On a free kick in the 16th minute, however, Wesley Sneijder was able to whip in a beautiful free kick that was pushed away by Jorg Butt, and the match remained scoreless.

But that all changed in the 35th minute, as off a kick from Inter keeper Julio Cesar, Inter were able to get the first goal of the match as Diego Milito headed the ball to Sneijder, who passed the ball back to Milito who faked the ball past Butt and into the net to give Inter the lead.

And Inter got the next great opportunity as Sneijder had a shot that Butt denied to keep Bayern in the match.

But Inter's defense was just too strong in that first half, as they limited Bayern to weak shots from distance.

And at the half, the score was 1-0 in favor of Inter Milan.

As the second half begin, Bayern got their best chance of the match within the first 30 seconds, as Hamit Altintop fed Thomas Müller with a beautiful pass that Müller was able to hit off the legs of Julio Cesar and away from the goal, keeping the score 1-0 in favor of Inter.

And as the second half continued, Bayern continued to hold the ball in the attacking half, but despite chances from Altintop and Arjen Robben, Bayern were unable to get the next goal of the match.

Instead, that goal came once again from Milito in the 70th minute, as the Argentine striker was able to fake out the Bayern defense before flicking the football past Butt to give Inter a 2-0 lead.

With that second goal, Inter had all but won the Champions League final, and despite the best efforts for Bayern to come back, Inter's defense was just too much.

And with that, Inter Milan won their third European Cup/Champions League title in their history, and ended the 45-year drought between titles for the Nerazzurri.

Also with the win, Jose Mourinho has now won his second Champions League title (his first one with FC Porto in 2004).

However, this appears to be Mourinho's final match with Inter Milan, as there are widely speculated rumors that Mourinho will be managing Real Madrid next season.
