Steroid Testing Is Bad For Boxing!
In watching ESPN Friday night fights (as i religiously do every week), I was ecstatic to hear legendary commentator Teddy Atlas make an observation. I say ecstatic because I and several boxing enthusiast were throwing around the same idea.
I basically feel that because of Olympic style testing Mosley wasn't able to perform on the level that we all expected him to. I predicted he would lose but I never thought I would see Mosely gasping for air in the fifth round. Mosley looked smaller, sluggish and very tired compared to when he fought Margarito.
Pac Man is also (Mosley is proven) suspected of using steroids. Looking back at Pac's fight against Clottey, I did feel he was a little slower than his previous fights and quite frankly surprised he wasn't able to knock out someone that just kept their hands up the whole time. Granted, he wasn't put through the same olympic style testing. I think it's safe to assume his team did a dry run just to see how he would perform.
With that being said, I have personally come across some polls that read something like " would you pick Pac to win with steroids or without?" . Something of that nature anyway. Maybe he is, maybe he isn't. I don'y know.
I personally don't care if they do. If testing means more boring fights. If testing means Mayweather not getting knocked out, then no. I don't want it. If these fighters allegedly use it, imagine how many others do. It could be as huge as the baseball scandal. Yes, on that level!
I understand the argument can be made that cheating is cheating. Some would even go as far as saying it's as bad if not worst than using plaster on their hands. I personally don't think that argument holds water. First of all, steroids isn't some miracle drug where you can k.o. every opponent that crosses your path. The skill has to be there and the work has to be put in. It's like saying " without steroids Barry Bonds could't hit any homers. That's just not true.
On the elite level where these guys and girls fight and play sports to entertain us. I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of athletes use some kind of steroids. We're talking millions on the line here. Not just boxing, every sport even performers. And if these athletes care so much about performing for us that their willing to sacrifice their bodies for us. So be it. Whether it's PPV or going to the ball park or a concert. That's what I pay for!
