Manchester City Vs Spurs: Who Seems More Capable For Champions League ?

Kaustav BoseMay 3, 2010

There are somethings money can't buy..a Champions League berth in Europe is apparently not one of them. After one of the most happening seasons in the Premier league, and a lot of hype about a four-way possibilty of a fourth spot..It has finally come down to just two. Manchester City and Tottenham, and it is not unknown to what contributed to such a stellar rise of these two teams for the contention of the Champions league Berth...its just BIG money, who spent it and how...
Just to sight where these two teams ended last season :

Tottenham - 8th
Manchester City - 10th

None spent quite as much, none played even the Europa ..

An interesting rumour has it that it was after the last game between these two teams, that the lavish owners of Manchester City thought they had enough of a particular Welsh, former Manchester United star at the hot seat and replaced him with former Italy International and ex-Inter milan coach Roberto Mancini following the next game that City played against Sunderland. Although the move was vehemently opposed by some then,it has proven to be quite a successful one till date and should the Citizens power their way to Champions League football, reversing the outcome in their last encounter, this move would be quite a talk in the city of Manchester.

After having quite convincingly beaten their bitter rivals after quite a long time, Tottenham also seem no toddlers in the contest and need barely a draw in the game to retain their vital lead ahead of last game in the league against the demoralized, relegated Burnley whilst City too would be playing "just scrapped through" west ham at upton park.
Thus with both the contenders  having comparitively easier matches on the last day of their campaign, their mutual encounter holds the key to who qualifies as this season's surprise "fourth", the "Big Four" being separated.

Now just having a glance at which team have the fire power to make it Big in the Champions League, here, with the galaxy of wealth that Man City has it can be taken for granted that if Champions League were to be given to the most potent team to be after the transfer market slams shut. With the wealthiest and also passionate owners it seems highly likely that this surge from the 10th spot to the level they would, this season, can only give way to further strengthening of the squad and a lot of cash-spalsh.Surely, if Chelsea is to be taken as an example, the fainter blues have the edge on the ability to cause maximum impact at the biggest club level competition in Europe.

Having said that, the Spurs have also had one of their best seasons in recent times and also should be a good addition to the champions league, but their inconsistent performances have let them down at times and more importantly, they are certainly not as potent as Manchester City to make it as BIG in the champions league via plundering of the transfer market. therefore even if the Spurs qualify for the Champions league they would be more like Hamburg FC of 2006 who qualified from the Bundesliga, however their performance in the CL may vary from Hamburg's though (should the spurs qualify).

At this moment though, on the basis of sheer spending ability and thus ability to lure talent with money (like the Robinho buy), Manchester City look to be a more promising threat in the Champions league and could very well be one of the better performers there, much like Chelsea.

Although to make their mark in the Champions League,Manchester City have to first beat their London rivals to stop the three BIG clubs from London from making the champions league and to do that they also have to be more consistent in their performance.
I believe that since Man City and Spurs have been so close for so long on the points table that a victory to either or passage to Champions league for either should not really say that the other has been the worser team in the season, its just a matter of that day only.,but should Man city qualify they seem to have a better wealth-wise, which may easily reflect in their arsenal when they compete next season for the best club in Europe.

Both Harry Redknapp & Roberto Mancini as of now should seem to be focussed on there pivotal encounter although if the hated United rivals make it ..do we hear Mancini whispering.. "I got the Power.."(in Italian of course ..!!) on the lines of Jim Carrey in "Bruce Almighty" . Thus taking the club ahead towards what the owners of Manchester City claimed when they took the club over..."We want to make the Club one of the best in the world"..
With the money and the willingness to part them..you have to be really brave (or a Coward) to bet against the meteoric rise of MANCHESTER CITY in the near future, given the current trend of European esp. English Club Football.

Anybody disagree ??
