Mystic Football and Numbers: Lionel Messi, FC Barcelona, Real Madrid
Numerology has been used in different kinds of activities by diverse empires in ancient days; but the presence of such a science in football nowadays is still debatable.
Nevertheless, no matter if numerology has its place in soccer or not, it is indubitable that the world’s most lucrative sport has its game of numbers; and this is more or less conspicuous for spectators.
It is unconfirmed that fans enjoy making calculations after seeing facts and statistics generated from football matches they watch; but in any case, attempts to discover “coinciding” details out of matches can sometimes open your eyes to mysterious verities. Surely, being successful in such detections depends on the level of knowledge one might have on the particular team or players he is targeting.
Although it is usually not my tendency to try and go beyond what is already put in front of the public, I decided to make an experiment on numbers and football results after I followed El Clasico.
Perhaps, you might not have noticed it, but I can assure you that Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, and superstar Lionel Messi are among the clubs and personalities which truly put into the question the presence of a mathematic-related science in football.
The Classic between Real Madrid and Barcelona, which ended 2-0 in favor of the Catalans, at the Bernabeu Stadium certainly presented a lot of what many would refer to as “coincidences”; considering the fact that goal minutes, and other information related to the clash led to calculations resulting in strange results.
I personally tried to spare a few minutes of my free time to make some mathematics and get a few facts, and I can affirm that the answers to my searches had mystifying meanings, which some of you would probably consider as “unrealistic and ridiculous.”
Regardless, I decided to publicize my results, in order to share with you readers the outcome of my “game.”
In fact, the numbers 7, 2, 3, and 1 were specially the numbers which made my calculations and discoveries even more interesting. So as to begin the game with me, you can just read on, and take a calculator along with you if you have some doubts about my estimates.
Number 7
Fact: Before El Clasico began, both Real Madrid and Barcelona had 77 points in La Liga standings, and with 7 more games to go in the competition (being Day 31), both teams were up to their tasks.
Lionel Messi was hoping to beat the new side of the former Manchester United No. 7 player at the Bernabeu Stadium for another time, and he got just what he was looking for.
A first period goal increased Lionel Messi’s goal tally against Real Madrid in his career to 7 , making him one of the best goal scorers against Los Blancos.
Conclusion: In one way or another, it is noticeable that the number 7 played quite a great role in El Clasico.
Numbers 6, 2
6-2 was the score line of El Clasico in favor of the Blaugrana at the end of last season, when they destroyed the Bernabeu Stadium. Ironically, the FIFA World Cup was 62 days away from the latest Classic which took place on April 10, 2010, also at the Bernabeu Stadium.
Numbers 7, 2
The number 7 comes again, but this time, it appears with the number 2 .
Fact: Lionel Messi scored a 33rd minute goal against Real Madrid. What is that important about it? Well, you notice that in football, seconds aren’t totally taken into consideration. Of course, on certain occasions, they do; but generally, a goal scored on 32 minutes and 50 seconds will be registered with the minute 33, just as a goal scored on 33 minutes and 15 seconds.
Anyways, let us take the minute 33 to associate with Messi’s goal against Real Madrid. If you calculate in different manners, you will see that the numbers 7 and 2 come to light over and over again.
Calculation 1
33 minutes = 1980 seconds. Let us exclude from 1980 the number 0 which has no value. We have the numbers 1, 9, and 8. Out of these numbers, we calculate:
1 x 9 x 8 = 72 .
Conclusion: We find the number 72 , which consists of the numbers 7 and 2 .
Calculation 2
1 hour = 60 minutes
60 minutes – 33 minutes = 27 minutes.
Conclusion: Lionel Messi scored 27 minutes from the hour mark and the numbers 7 and 2 appear again.
Calculation 3
1 half in a football match = 45 minutes
45 minutes – 33 minutes = 12 minutes
12 minutes = 72 0 seconds.
Conclusion: According to what was written on the score board at the Bernabeu Stadium, Lionel Messi presumably scored with 72 0 seconds left in the first half. Let us exclude from 72 0 the number 0 which has no value. The numbers 7 and 2 appear again.
Calculation 4
Lionel Messi and Pedro scored on 33 minutes and 56 minutes respectively. Out of the numbers 33 and 56, we calculate:
3 x 3 x 5 x 6 = 27 0.
Conclusion: The minutes in which Messi and Pedro scored lead to calculations resulting in the number 27 0, which contains the numbers 2 and 7 .
Calculation 5
Lionel Messi scored his 7 th goal against Real Madrid, and he now has 27 goals in La Liga. I guess I do not need to write any conclusion as the numbers 7 and 2 are openly visible.
Another unconvincing fact could show that 7 + 2 = 9 , the present number of former No. 7 player Cristiano Ronaldo.
Numbers 1, 3
Afterward, we have another issue with the numbers 3 and 1 . Looking at El Clasico’s statistics, you will realize that a few facts and calculations can repeatedly lead you to the numbers 3 and 1. Let us give this a try...
Fact: El Clasico was played on Day 31 of La Liga.
Fact: El Clasico happened 31 weeks after Lionel Messi played against Brazil with Argentina in his hometown Rosario, the Argentine city which had not witnessed a match from the Albicelestes for many years. The score line between the Argentina and Brazil bizarrely finished 3-1 in favor of the visitors.
Fact: April 2010 is the 31 st month counting from October 2007, the month of the year in which Barcelona were beaten 2-0 at the Bernabeu Stadium by their arch rivals Real Madrid. Fortunately for Barcelona, this score line got reversed at their delight on April 10, 2010.
