The Real Winner of Pacquiao vs. Clottey Was...

King JMar 16, 2010

The super welterweight boxing fight known as “The Event” took place this past Saturday night, and it starred the No. 1 pound for pound WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao taking on Joshua Clottey.

At the end of 12 one-sided rounds, Pacquiao had his hands raised high in victory via a unanimous decision. Two of the judges scored the fight 119 to 109 (Pacquiao winning 11 rounds to one), and one judge scored it 120 to 108 (Pacquiao winning all 12 rounds).

Pacquiao clearly won the fight and tried to give the fans something to get excited over by throwing more punches than he ever did at an air tight defensive Clottey who did not open up throughout the fight to give the champion a chance at cracking his chin. Pacquiao then focused primarily to the body of Clottey, landing 108 body shots according to compubox stats.

Many casual fans expressed that this was not your typical exciting Pacquiao fight. There were no knockdowns or knock outs and of course because one fighter came to fight and one came to survive. But that can not be held against Pacquiao, for he did what he had to do in order to win the fight, and he tried his best to put on an exciting show for the 50,000 plus fans in attendance.

Also, another big winner that night, who could even be viewed as a bigger winner even than Pacquiao, was billionaire Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. For many, this Pacquiao versus Clottey fight was nothing more than a multi-million dollar commercial for his new billion dollar stadium.

Michael Buffer would name drop Jones as the host of the event whenever he could.  HBO commentator Max Kellerman would be seen throughout many sections of the stadium showing off its unique features and views much like an episode of MTV’s Cribs.

We could not get enough of that massive 60 yard long HD wide screen and did not care that Jim Lampley would mention it every 20 minutes or so. The turnout for the fight ended up to be over 50,000 people strong, making it the third biggest boxing match audience behind only Ali versus Spinks and Whitaker versus Chavez.

Personally, I found the Jones’ billion dollar “crib” to be rather intriguing, and I would love to fly into Texas and see a fight there. The multi-million dollar commercial known as Pacquiao versus Clottey sold me. Last weekend Jones was a big winner, if not king, of the world—at least for a weekend.

If you missed Pacquiao versus Clottey, HBO will replay it this Saturday March 20 at 11:00 PM (ET/PT) on HBO. Other HBO playdates:  March 21 (9:00 AM) and 22 (12 AM). HBO2 playdates:  March 21 (5:00 PM) and 23 (12 AM).

PS:  Over 50,000 people packed the new billion dollar Cowboys stadium to see the Pac Man dominate an unknown fighter. Did some one say boxing is dead?
