A Look at The Weekend Ahead: Who? Mike Jones

Tyler CurtisFeb 25, 2010
After a slow TV weekend here in the U.S., this weekend packs a lot of punch. There are three cards that will make their way to free TV and a card that will be available via PPV.
Fight Night Club gets the weekend started with a decent card. Victor Ortiz (25-2, 20 KO) goes against Hector Alatorre (16-8, 5 KO) in a fight that he should win and look good in doing it. At the very least Ortiz is a fun young fighter to watch, so that is worth tuning in for.
There are two other interesting bouts on this card. The first is Luis Ramos, Jr. (13-0, 7 KO) fighting Walter Estrada (35-11, 24 KO). Again, this is a fight that Ramos should win fairly easy, as Estrada has lost six of his last seven and has been knocked out in four of those losses (and in three straight). Nonetheless, this is a step-up fight for Ramos, and like Ortiz he is a young fun fighter to watch.
The last fight to watch for on that card is Jesse Vargas (8-0, 3 KO) against Robert Luna, Jr. (5-0, 3 KO). Vargas is a young fighter and seems to have a bright future ahead of him, so you should keep an eye on him. This card is on FSN so check your listings to see when it will be aired.
ESPN’s Friday Night Fights keeps the good weekend going. Their main event pits Antonio Escalante (22-2. 14 KO) against Miguel Roman (28-6, 20 KO). Escalante is a true contender at the featherweight division and is fun to watch. He has won eight straight and is looking to add another victim to that streak.
Roman seems to have good pop in his punches with his 20 knockouts in 28 wins. He is coming off of a loss, so you know he will want to get back into the win column. This fight airs on ESPN2 at 9 PM.
The final card on free TV in the U.S. is the most exciting. Mike Jones (19-0, 16 KO) will fight veteran Henry Bruseles (28-3-1, 15 KO) in the main event. This is a good chance for Mike Jones to show his stuff.
He is one of the most exciting young prospect but has had trouble finding TV time. This is a step-up fight for him and I am sure he will be ready for the challenge.
The undercard for this pits Kendall Holt (25-3, 12 KO) against Kaizer Mabuza (22-6-3, 13 KO) in an IBF light welterweight eliminator. Holt is always exciting and has a chance to get back in the title hunt with this fight.
I don’t know much about Mabuza except that he seems to have some pop in his gloves. This seems to be a step-up fight for him. This is also his first fight in the U.S. and only second fight outside of his native South Africa.
Again, check listings for this card as it is going to be on FSN.
The PPV fight this weekend seems to be an interesting one as Rodel Mayol (26-4-1, 20 KO) defends his WBC Light Flyweight Title against Omar Nino Romero (28-3-1, 11 KO). This is the first defense for Mayol.
Romero is a former WBC Light Flyweight Titlist. He won the title in 2006 when he beat Brian Viloria. He was forced to vacate the title after fighting Viloria in a rematch and testing positive for drugs.
Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. (17-0-1, 14 KO) opens the card against 19-year-old sensation Marvin Sonsona (14-0-1, 12 KO) in a WBO Super Bantamweight title fight.
Sonsona is already a former belt-holder, as he won the WBO Super Flyweight title last year. Vazquez, Jr. is no slouch and this fight should be a barn burner. The PPV card is this Saturday at 9 PM and is $34.95.
So, that is the weekend ahead for U.S. boxing fans and it looks like it will be a fun one indeed.
