Dunking Has Made Basketball "Impure"

Michael HershmanFeb 17, 2010

Just another short read on an interesting topic.

Has dunking made the game of basketball impure?

Yes. It may be all ooh-that and aah-that but seriously, if you think about it, it might be the easiest way to get a ball into a circle.

Have you ever watched a basketball game before Jordan was born? At that time, pretty much nobody even thought about dunking the ball.

These days, the 80's layup has become, THE DUNK.

And that has evolved into the alley-oop. (If you really think about it, it's sort of like a basket interference)

Paul Pierce came up with a suggestion for the NBA a couple of months ago. Raise the rim 3 inches higher. I strongly approve of that idea. At least dunking would take a bit more athletiscm then.

My guess is that David Stern would just throw that idea out like King George III did with the Olive Branch Petiton. (Google this if you have no idea what I'm talking about).

After everything I have just said, I have come to realize that dunking is just a way to attract extra fans to come to NBA games. What else is Lebron James known for besides his scoring and playmaking skills? His dunks. That's probably what made him so popular and got him his own shoe line.

That's all I have to say. A dunk is acceptable maybe once every 4-5 minutes but it just can't become the natural way to score in a game.
