2010 NFL Draft: Detroit Lions Need to Make History, Draft Linemen

Ismail AijazuddinFeb 17, 2010

The 2010 NFL draft could be monumental for the Detroit Lions. Something that hasn't happened this century could occur:The Lions might draft a defensive lineman with their first pick!

There is a solid chance that the Lions will even draft another defensive lineman in their top three picks. It only takes the top class of defensive linemen in recent memory for this to be possible.

The Lions also need to address the offensive line. One of the biggest needs on offense is guard. Look for this to be taken care of by the middle of the draft.

The lines are not the only problems in Detroit.

We could use a few defensive backs, a receiver, or even a running back. But if the lines do not improve, the Lions will not improve.

If they don't build the trenches now, will they ever?

In the first round, look for Detroit to end up with one of the top two defensive tackles. The Lions won't be picky about Suh or McCoy. Unless they trade down, they have to draft this way.

In the second or third round, the Lions should go for an end. In the second, Corey Wootton fits Jim Schwartz's idea of a big end. In the third, Greg Hardy or Alex Carrington would be ideal.

Unless Detroit finds an end in free agency, expect one to be taken early.

A few picks on the defensive line will make that group full of potential and talent. The offensive line will also need some help.

On the offensive line, I'm an optimist.

I think Jeff Backus looks bad because of weak guard play next to him. I like Raiola; think Peterman was solid; and will give Gosder one last chance.

Even I can't put a positive spin on the left guard position.

We absolutely need to get a new guard. This is as important as drafting a defensive tackle. The entire offensive line struggles because of this weak link.

At guard, a mid-round pick could step in right away. The draft isn't too deep at this position, so look for a pick to be made around the third to fifth rounds.

If Jon Asamoah is available in the third round, the Lions might consider him, if not I've always liked Brandon Carter out of Texas Tech in the fourth or fifth.

If you have seen Brandon Carter, you will know that his appearance alone should scare away half the defensive tackles he will be facing. He is 6'6', 326 pounds, and covered in tattoos. He would bring much needed attitude to the Lions' offense

No matter who they draft, the Lions will have to upgrade both lines. They have added quite a few solid players over the last year, but besides Sammie Hill, no linemen.

Now is the time for the Detroit Lions to make history.
