Will The Magic Of Devin Hester Return?

Dustin BrownFeb 10, 2010

The Receiver, Kick Returner, End Around Weapon, and everything else...

Recently, as I'm sure most of the confused, saddened Bears' fans have heard, Chicago's new offensive "genius," Mike Martz, has commented on the usage of Devin Hester. Maybe it's a sign of hope for the fans all around the NFL who miss Hester's tricks when it comes to returning kicks. Maybe it's a sign of hope that the Miami native will become the receiver that we've been striving to unleash for so long. Or...maybe, it's a sign that Devin will slowly fade away.

Martz, the field general that created the offense dubbed as "The Greatest Show on Turf,"  has honestly impressed me thus far. Just from the way he communicates has struck me. If you have listened to anything this guy is saying, he seems to know his football. From offense to the opposing secondary, he certainly has done his homework.

The Hope

The Bears' new coordinator has made some..interesting comments, none the less. When asked about Chicago's former number 1 wide out, Martz hinted at Hester not being the go-to receiver.

It seems to be correct, however. Hester has potential to become a great receiver, but not for another season or two. Martz's comments on what Hester could do in the slot position showed promise. This is what exactly Mike Martz was recorded saying on the Mully and Hanley Show on WSCR-670 AM : "Devin Hester in that role could just be stupid good, if that makes sense to you." Martz stated. "What we could do with him inside, the match ups we can get with him on third [string] corners, safeties and linebackers would be absolutely remarkable."

With Hester's amazing speed and agility, it's possible that he could burn anyone, with the right coaching. Devin Hester doesn't only have straight line speed, but can maintain his blazing ability throughout cuts and jukes. That's something that Johnny Knox doesn't have. Imagine someone that fast and elusive matched up against a third string corner or linebacker.

What Martz is saying is completely correct. After watching Devin Aromashodu burning Vikings' corner ; Antoine Winfield, it seems as though the other Devin could do the same.
