Arsenal: Give the Gunners a Break

abhijeet prabhakarFeb 10, 2010

The entire global media has gotten on an Arsenal Tirade over the last couple of days, since the prompt dismantling experienced at Chelsea. The Gunners and Wenger have always taken the spotlight in the media—be it the double disasters experienced over the hell-week that has passed, or the bitter November lesson learnt from Chelsea, or the lack of transfer activity which has left the team, and especially Arshavin, hopelessly stranded up front.

No one can really blame the media. The media loves Arsenal. When the Gunners went top of the table last month (before the disaster run began), the press and the web went haywire. The media likes Arsenal. You and I like Arsenal, the neutral likes Arsenal. We so desperately want this Arsenal team to win something this season, or any season—just to break the two-horse race.

In the ten years I have been an Arsenal fan, I think this is the worst beating the team has taken, both on and off the field. This team is also the most hopelessly imbalanced Arsenal team I have seen, but that is a story for another day.

This, ladies and gentlemen, is the end of an era.

The press has now caught up with Wenger. The media has no one else to attack at this point; there is no Henry, no Vieira, no Tony Adams to point fingers at. Wenger has nowhere to hide.

And this is a good thing.

This media tirade was necessary to shake up Wenger, shake up the team, shake up the system.

Make no mistake, there will be unprecedented changes in the Arsenal team this summer. I do believe that Wenger will be able to persuade the core of the team to stay, i.e. Fabregas-VanPersie-Arshavin and others.

However, they would only remain on promise of reinforcements—a strong DM, a couple of CBs, and a big and strong forward. Many of our average players will leave as well. Arsene will be driven over the edge.

Make no mistake, Wenger will not leave, Wenger cannot leave, Wenger must not leave. Wenger is the reason why Arsenal were battling for first place in the first place. Wenger is the reason for the absolutely stunning Ashburton Grove. He is the reason why Arsenal is in a sound financial condition right now.

Some fans are calling for his head, and that is absolutely and completely unreasonable, and disrespectful.

The end of this season will mark the beginning of a new team and a new style of play—a much stronger (physically) Arsenal will emerge out of this catastrophic week.

As the saying goes, "That which does not kill you makes you stronger." This week has taught the team more than they would have ever learnt over the last two-three seasons.

As for Fabregas? If he goes to Barcelona, he will go straight to the bench like Hleb, as there is no way he can replace Xavi anytime in the near future. The deal is possible, but detrimental for the man. Hopefully good sense prevails over the media frenzy.

Come on ye Gooners!!!!
