Spartan Hoopla: Kalin Lucas' Ankle Could Be Michigan State's Achilles' Heel

Adam BiggersFeb 3, 2010

Spartan Nation held its collective breath for close to two minutes last night when Kalin Lucas rolled his ankle on Keaton Nankivil's (Wisconsin) foot while descending from a jump shot.

Lucas' "Ankivil" could be the Spartans' Achilles' heel if he fails to return.

The reigning Big Ten Player of the Year does so much more than score a load of points every night (15.6); he's Tom Izzo's eyes and ears on the floor.

Lucas, who is doubtful for Saturday's game at Illinois, leads the Spartans (19-4,9-1) offensively, and his absence could potentially cost Michigan State a conference title. Wisconsin handed Michigan State its first Big Ten loss in convincing fashion last night, 67-49, and it's quickly gaining a full head of steam.

The Badgers couldn't have fallen on luckier stars than Lucas being sidelined. They will be priming themselves to make a run at the Big Ten title, something that appeared elusive to them just a week ago.

Lucas will be sporting a foot-immobilizing boot for the next four days in hopes that it will help his ankle heal quicker. He has been diagnosed with a high-ankle sprain and is crutch-bound—bad news for Izzo at the worst possible time.

Expect sophomore Korie Lucious at the helm come Saturday if Lucas is unable to suit up.

Not only is "Too Easy's" sprained ankle detrimental to Michigan State's conference title race, it's also a dark cloud looming over its tournament hopes. Without its leading scorer and floor general, don't expect Michigan State to miraculously appear in the Final Four.

Chris Allen's lack of offense now becomes an even bigger thorn in his offense's side. Lucious, Lucas' understudy, will be forced to mature rapidly if the Spartans wish to do some damage in March.

Without jumping to conclusions, Izzo will have to prepare his team for "life after Lucas," forcing athletes like Durrell Summers and Delvon Roe to pick up where Lucas has left off.

Now is the time for the Spartans' bigs to step up—like it or not.
