Today (1992): Barry Bonds Signs the Highest Single Year Contract ($4.7 Mil)
February 1, 1991
Barry Bonds began February of 1992 by signing the highest one-year contract in baseball’s history. To put it in context, Manny Ramirez rejected a one-year, $25 million contract (before accepting a two-year, $45 million contract) from the Los Angeles Dodgers last February.
The one-year contract proved to be the last year Bonds played with the Pittsburgh Pirates, before heading West to San Francisco and a plethora of doctors with horse pills.

1992 was a big year for Pittsburgh and you could argue that the $4.5 million one-year contract was worth every penny. Bonds took home his second MVP award and the Pirates enjoyed a first place finish in the NL East – which also stands as their last winning season to date.
No, seriously.
