What's Making Me Talk: First Edition

Nino CollaJun 23, 2008

Welcome to this weekly rundown of the great world of Major League Baseball. Giving you the three best and the three worst performances of the week, in my opinion at least, was fun. But now I feel like changing it up for the rest of the year.

I've got many thoughts that run though my mind every week. Some are very small and are not worthy enough of an entire article, while other could make me talk for hours if I wanted.

What are you going to see here? Anything and everything. One week I could be in a very bad mood and start trashing things, and another, I could just hit you with a bunch of rhetorical questions.

TOP NEWS

Washington Nationals v Los Angeles Angels
New York Yankees v. Chicago Cubs

Without any further explanation, here's what's making me talk in the past week of baseball.

What's Making Me Happy

Watching C.C. Sabathia hit a home run after he told FOX's Chris Rose that he would hit his second career home run. Sabathia is the best pitcher among American Leaguers in interleague play right now.

Can you imagine the Cubs picking him up? They'd have two of the best hitting pitchers in the majors. The Indian fan in me now wants to stop talking about this.

I have to also mention that he used a bat from Adam Dunn to hit the home run. He also struck out twice, proving that he did indeed use Dunn's bat.

What's Making Me Sad

Seeing Curt Schilling's career possibly end after it was announced he will have season-ending surgery.

I've heard that the Red Sox insisted he follow their rehab plan rather than him have surgery.

If he would have had the surgery earlier, he might have had a chance to return this year. Now, he has no shot of making a start, what a shame.

I always liked Schilling, even his big mouth. My hat is off to one of the greater postseason pitchers in MLB history. I hope he and John Smoltz can give fans one more year and a proper send-off.

What's Making Me Mad

J.P. Ricciardi and his comments towards Adam Dunn.

First of all Mr. Ricciardi, you are a general manager for the Toronto Blue Jays. You have no relation to Adam Dunn, giving you no reason to be talking about him in a negative way.

Ricciardi said the following to a caller on his radio show last week.

"Do you know that the guy really doesn't like baseball all that much? Do you know the guy doesn't have a passion to play the game that much? How much do you know about the player?"

How do you, J.P. Ricciardi, general manager of the Toronto Blue Jays, know Adam Dunn well enough to say he doesn't like the game that much?

This ticks me off to no end because I simply cannot stand a person like Ricciardi, who is no stranger to speaking out.

What could actually be great about all of this? Cincinnati travels to Toronto for a three-game series starting tomorrow. I'm personally rooting for Adam Dunn to hit half a dozen home runs.

What's Pleasantly Confusing Me

I watched Ryan Dempster beat the White Sox last night, and I for one am just confused on how a maligned closer has turned into the second-best starter in the Chicago Cubs' rotation.

Dempster is truly one of the better stories this year in baseball. He struggled as the Cubs closer the past few years, sometimes battling injuries. Now he is planning on pitching 200-plus innings as a solid starter.

This isn't Braden Looper, decent-starter stuff either. This is All-Star caliber pitching from Dempster. I'm shocked at how well this has worked out.

What I Am Randomly Thinking About

Jerry Crasnick's article on utility players is great. I love utility men, and I'm glad the Indians finally got one like Jamey Carroll. Looking at the ones on that list, DeRosa is far and away the best one. There isn't a position he can't play, and it seems like he is an everyday player that can't lock down an everyday gig.

Kevin Youkilis homered twice yesterday. I'm excited because I dealt for him in one of my fantasy leagues. The main guy I gave up was Ryan Doumit. Not only is Doumit battling a concussion, I have Joe Mauer as my starting catcher. Now, what do I do with Joe Crede?

Jeff Baker hit three home runs in a three-game series last week, one being of the inside the park variety. When is the last time someone did that? Someone call Elias and tell them to get on it.

Tim Lincecum is a stud of a pitcher. I hope the Giants get him some help fairly quickly or else he won't get the justice he deserves in terms of accolades.

What upcoming series this week am I looking forward to? How about Arizona and Boston starting tonight from Fenway? Two of the best teams in each league squaring off. You can find two of the three games on national television as well. Monday's matchup is one you need to catch, with Dan Haren and Josh Beckett squaring off.
