Amir Khan vs. Kell Brook: Fight Odds, Live Stream, Predictions

Nate LoopFeb 17, 2022

After years of sparring in the media, Amir Khan (34-5, 21 KOs) and Kell Brook (39-3, 27 KOs) are finally ready to meet in the ring and settle their differences. The British boxing stars will face off in a 12-round, 149-pound catchweight clash on Saturday at the AO Arena in Manchester, England.

For many fans, this fight is coming far too late. Both boxers are 35 years old and several years removed from holding world titles.

A meeting between the two in, say, 2015 or 2016 would have been one of the biggest matches on the calendar. Here in 2022, it's a bitter grudge match that will at least give fans something to point to when they debate who was the better boxer.

Preview, Predictions

It's difficult to get a read on what we'll see from Khan and Brook on Saturday. Neither fighter has won a big match in years, and both are old enough to see their talents deteriorate rapidly.

Brook was a powerful fighter with great timing in his prime, holding the IBF world welterweight title and beating the likes of Shawn Porter. Khan, meanwhile, relied on blazing hand speed to get the better of his opponents. He was a unified junior welterweight champion in the early 2010s, but he failed to replicate that success after moving up to welterweight.

Speed is often the first thing to go, which is perhaps why Khan is a slight underdog heading into this one. It doesn't help matters that Khan hasn't fought since July 2019, beating the unheralded Billy Dib by fourth-round TKO in Saudi Arabia.

It's quite a long time to be out of action. His last significant fight was a loss to Terence "Bud" Crawford. He managed to make it to the sixth round against the welterweight champion before the referee called off the action.

In preparation for his upcoming bout, Khan has turned to Crawford for help, training with the champion in the latter's hometown of Omaha, Nebraska.

"They pushed me hard every day and I've done a few rounds with Crawford, sparring, and I can see how much I've come on. He's been very supportive of me in camp, says he will be going to England to support me, we are just like one big family in training camp," said Khan, per ESPN.com's Nick Parkinson.

As it turns out, Brook's most recent opponent was also Crawford, which makes for a handy reference point. He took on the American in November 2020, but he didn't last as long as Khan. He put in a solid showing for three rounds but was ultimately stopped in the fourth by a big right hand and a barrage of punches that led to a TKO.

Brook fought one other time in 2020, scoring a seventh-round knockout against Mark DeLuca earlier in the year. The power may still be there for the Sheffield native, and he is confident he can conjure up another KO against Khan.

"I won't go out and be stupid by looking for the knockout," Brook said, per Sky Sports' James Dielhenn. "But if I am 100 percent, which I am, then the shot will come. I believe it will happen at some point in the fight."

Brook is probably on to something here with his stoppage prediction. The fight may eventually come down to who has the weaker chin. Brook has been stopped by all three of his biggest opponents: Crawford, Errol Spence Jr. and Gennady Golovkin. The latter two fights led to fractures in his orbital socket.

As for Khan, he's been known to have a suspect chin and has suffered famous knockouts at the hands of Danny Garcia and Canelo Alvarez. He also suffered a knockdown in the first round against Crawford. He will have to be extremely wary of Brook's power, even if it is waning. The same issue stands for Brook. If Khan can use his speed to pile up combinations, he may find it tough to generate his own offense.

This fight feels like a complete toss-up, but Khan's work with Crawford just might give him a mental edge over Brook. Look for some solid back-and-forth action between the two rivals in the middle rounds before Khan pulls out a late victory.

Prediction: Khan by late stoppage
