Pelicans' Alvin Gentry Compares Zion to Giannis, Kevin Durant After NBA Lottery

Rob GoldbergMay 14, 2019

The New Orleans Pelicans won the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft via Tuesday's lottery, and head coach Alvin Gentry is already dreaming about Zion Williamson and his possible impact on the team.

Gentry was asked what position the former Duke star will play at the next level and said he can be a do-it-all player like other stars around the league.

"I'm glad we'll have that problem," the coach said, per Ben Golliver of the Washington Post. "Giannis plays all 5. KD. Golden State has made this a pass, cut and relocate league."

Williamson is certainly a much different player than either Giannis Antetokounmpo or Kevin Durant, but like them, he can make a significant impact in a lot of areas.

The 6'7", 285-pound prospect has the strength to match up with big men in the post and also possesses the athleticism and lateral quickness to defend guards. While he will play mostly as a 3 or 4 in the NBA, he is certainly capable of switching onto nearly any position.

His averages of 8.9 rebounds, 2.1 steals and 1.8 blocks per game show the type of impact he can have on the defensive end.

On offense, his team simply needs to get the ball in his hands and get out of his way. He is as good as anyone at getting into the lane and finishing well above the rim, making him extremely difficult to defend.

He not only averaged 22.6 points per game during his freshman season at Duke, but he also made 68 percent of his attempts from the field.

That production helped him post the highest player efficiency rating of the past decade, per Sports Reference.

Williamson has a style that hasn't been seen much in the NBA, but his potential leaves little doubt he could have the same type of impact as stars like Antetokounmpo and Durant.
