Report: Man United to Confirm Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as Boss During Internationals

Matt JonesMar 12, 2019

Manchester United are reportedly hopeful of confirming Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as the club's new permanent manager during the upcoming international break.

According to John Cross of the Daily Mirror, the Red Devils have decided to hand the Norwegian the job on a full-time basis after a brilliant spell in charge.

"Initially, the plan was to leave the decision on [Jose] Mourinho's full-time successor until the end of the season, but United are now ready to bring it forward so they can get a head start on planning for next season," Cross wrote. "...It is now just a matter of time before Solskjaer is announced, and the forthcoming international break starting after next weekend's matches is the obvious choice."

It's added the job will be "reward" for Solskjaer, having steered the Red Devils into the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League and propelled them back into a battle for a top-four spot.

The Red Devils will reportedly pay Molde, who Solskjaer was previously the manager of, a compensation package of £8 million in order to secure the former striker.

Per Squawka Football, the 46-year-old is a figure steeped in United history:

Few anticipated Solskjaer would make a massive impact at United, never mind putting himself in a position where not giving him the job was inconceivable. After being appointed in December following the departure of former boss Jose Mourinho, he only suffered his first domestic loss against Arsenal on Sunday.

Per Rob Dawson of ESPN FC, even in the slip-up at the Emirates, there were good things to take away from the game from United's perspective:

Prior to that, the coach's tenure had been almost exclusively positive, with United supporters enjoying wins at Arsenal and Chelsea in the FA Cup, as well as Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League.

The high point of his spell in charge came last Wednesday, as the Red Devils produced a remarkable comeback to knock Paris Saint-Germain out of the Champions League, with a last-gasp penalty from Marcus Rashford putting them into the last eight:

Bleacher Report's Nick Akerman thinks that confirming Solskjaer as the club's next boss is the sensible move:

While there is still much for supporters to learn about the Norwegian as a manager at this level, so far he's showcased a lot of good traits.

Not only is the team operating with more verve and discipline, but key players like Rashford, Romelu Lukaku and Paul Pogba have made major strides. Additionally, the fanbase has been enlivened by having a club icon back in charge of the team.

As of yet, we've yet to see how Solskjaer reacts to adversity and how effective he is when it comes to working in the transfer market. United clearly have belief he will be able to thrive in those circumstances, as much as he has in other areas to this point.
