Manchester City: Can They Buy a Spot in the Top Four?

Jake KirbyJun 8, 2008

Manchester City, the club that went from rags to riches within a matter of days, but what has bemused me is that despite their huge transfer kitty, which bare in mind is stated at £200m, and their new manager Mark Hughes, can they really do what Thaksin wants and become a world class top four club? They always say money can't buy you fame, but when the money is of that extent, is that phrase wrong?

Already linked with amazing acts such as Ronaldinho, Jo and Roque Santa Cruz, any non-genius would be able to suggest that they were on the up and that a top four place was inevitable, but as we saw last year, with Sven Goran-Ericsson at the helm, big transfers don't get you up the table... So, what exactly does?

Many believe it is a moral that drives players to success, which if is correct Man City will be in for good times with such a motivating boss like Hugues in charge. Others think that with class players fielding your side week in week out is the way to go about it. Personally, in my opinion it is a mixture of both. Without the star players, who get's anywhere? But without any kick or moral in those star players, you don't go anywhere either. Manchester City could very well buy in Ronaldinho, but if he isn't focused to play a game of football, then he will just end up playing like me... shite.

You see, i'm a Manchester United fan, but I am extremly intrigued to track Man. City's progress this season, just to determine just how much wealth effects how a team plays. Take the England national side for one, you look at the squad on paper, and you take a step back in harmony, but when you actually watch the side play, you gradually fall too sleep. Sorry Fab, but it's true. In my opinion, Hughes could end up just like another Sven, at the cluba  season, brings them a vast improvment from the previous season, but still somehow get's the sack. After all, they aren't a Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal or Liverpool... yet.

Even though I doubt City will break into the top four this season, i do still believe they will improve immensely, and I also expect a lot of big names to arrive at the City of Manchester season in the build up to next season.

So... how do you all feel about this on-going debate?
