Odell Beckham Jr. Will Attend Giants Training Camp Without New Contract

Tyler ConwayJul 23, 2018

As expected, Odell Beckham Jr. will be at New York Giants facilities when training camp opens Wednesday.

"He wants to play football, he wants to win," a source told Kimberly Jones of NFL Network.

Beckham confirmed his attendance with a post on Instagram:

The three-time Pro Bowler was absent from voluntary workouts in hopes of landing a long-term contract but did attend mandatory minicamp. He's making $8.5 million while playing out the fifth-year option of his rookie contract.

Ralph Vacchiano of SNY spoke to Beckham last month, and the star wideout said he had no plans of holding out.

Beckham, 25, is coming off an injury-riddled 2017 season that saw him set career lows in every major receiving category. He was limited to just four games due to leg injuries.

The Giants may want to see Beckham return to his All-Pro form before committing long term, and there have long been questions about his attitude. His frustration has boiled over on the field at multiple points throughout his career, including a legendary beef with Washington cornerback Josh Norman.

Giants owner John Mara did not express any urgency to get the deal done when speaking to reporters in May.

"I wouldn't say a sense of urgency," Mara said. "The contract will get done when it's supposed to get done. I think that's the Dave Gettleman line. I'm gonna adopt that I think, all spring, all summer, as long as it takes. It's not the first contract negotiation we've ever had. It'll get done when it's supposed to get done."

Beckham's next contract will almost certainly make him the highest-paid receiver in NFL history. If he returns to his pre-2017 form this coming season, the Giants might regret not locking him in sooner.
