United boss Jose Mourinho had earlier spoken about the Scot and how his ill-health had affected the club he managed for 26 years, as shown by Sky Sports Football:
Ferguson is widely considered to be the greatest British manager of all time due to his success at Manchester United. He arrived at the club from Aberdeen and established a period of dominance, winning multiple league titles and the UEFA Champions League twice.
News of his condition has seen tributes and well wishes flood in from all over the world. Midfielder Michael Carrick told MUTV (h/t The Independent) the messages were a mark of how respected he is in football:
"That's the effect he had on people. It was the effect he had on everyone. He means a lot to me, as he does to this club. We were all praying for him and thinking of him, Cathy and the family. It's a tough time for everyone but I'm thinking positive and hoping he will pull through."
Manchester United's players were said to be "devastated" to hear of Ferguson's admittance to hospital, per Samuel Luckhurst at the Manchester Evening News.
Ferguson may have stepped down in 2013, but he brought first-teamers David De Gea, Paul Pogba, Antonio Valencia, Ashley Young and Carrick to the club.
Carrick said the news Ferguson was no longer in intensive care was amazing, via Twitter:
Scott Patterson of ESPN FC also spoke of his relief:
Ferguson was last seen in public at Manchester United's Premier League clash over Arsenal, a game they won 2-1. The Scot presented his old rival Arsene Wenger with a gift on his last visit to Old Trafford before the Frenchman leaves the Gunners in the summer.
