Oscar De La Hoya Finalizing Chuck Liddell, Tito Ortiz Contracts for MMA League
Oscar De La Hoya is beginning his own MMA company and is on the brink of getting two big names to join for a high-profile fight.
On Tuesday, TMZ Sports reported that Chuck Liddell is close to signing with the organization, and Tito Ortiz is considered a top option for an upcoming bout.
"We're finalizing contracts, getting everything rolling," De La Hoya said.
De La Hoya mentioned the history between Liddell and Ortiz as a possible driving factor. The two battled at UFC 47 in April 2004 and UFC 66 in December 2006, and Liddell won both matches via technical knockout.
Of course, the last match in that rivalry was arguably the peak of the Iceman's stardom, as he lost his UFC light heavyweight championship to Quinton "Rampage" Jackson in his next bout at UFC 71. Liddell then lost four of his final five matches before calling it quits in 2010.
Ortiz, another former light heavyweight champion, has competed more recently, defeating Chael Sonnen at Bellator 170 in January 2017.
With both fighters north of 40 years old, there will be legitimate questions about what kind of shape they are in. However, they were two of the first big stars in UFC in the late 1990s and early 2000s, and they could help bring the spotlight to De La Hoya's new venture.
