Report: MRI on Dante Exum's Hamstring Injury Shows Strain; Listed as Day-to-Day
While the Utah Jazz fell behind 3-1 in their second-round series against the Houston Rockets on Sunday, a silver lining is guard Dante Exum reportedly avoided a serious hamstring injury.
Exum left Sunday's Game 4 in the second half and didn't return, and TNT's broadcast captured him grimacing in clear pain on his way to the locker room. According to Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports, an MRI revealed the injury was a strained hamstring, leaving Exum day-to-day.
Charania noted Exum will undergo further evaluation Monday prior to Tuesday's Game 5.
The injury was a difficult blow for the Jazz during the contest because Exum played well in the first half and aggressively attacked the basket while creating looks for an offense that largely struggled on its way to 87 points.
The point guard finished with nine points on 4-of-6 shooting from the field, and his absence was felt even more down the stretch because Utah was already without the injured Ricky Rubio. As a result, Raul Neto was given additional responsibilities. Donovan Mitchell and Joe Ingles handled the ball as well.
Injuries are nothing new for Exum, who played just 14 games this season and averaged 8.1 points and 3.1 assists a night. He underwent shoulder surgery prior to the start of the season and made his 2017-18 debut on March 15.
He also missed the entire 2015-16 campaign because of a torn ACL he suffered while playing for the Australian national team.
The Jazz are now in a situation where they will play a waiting game with their point guards before Tuesday's contest. In addition to Exum's day-to-day status, Tim MacMahon of ESPN.com reported Rubio was deemed questionable for Game 4 before ultimately sitting out, suggesting he may not be far from returning.
