Carson Wentz on Return from Injury: 'I Believe I'll Be Back Better Than Ever'

Timothy RappMay 7, 2018

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz continues to remain optimistic regarding his return from a torn ACL this past season.

"Rehab has been great. It's quite the process. So far everything is going well," he said on the GMFB show Monday, per Will Selva of NFL Network. "My goal is to be ready Week 1. As an aggressive player, I'm not going to change. I believe I'll be back better than ever."

His mechanics are reportedly sound as well as he recovers, per Ian Rapoport of NFL.com:

Wentz was excellent in 2017, throwing for 3,296 yards, 33 touchdowns and seven interceptions in 13 games. He also rushed for 299 yards, and his ability to extend plays and find receivers downfield or break the pocket to make plays with his legs made the Eagles offense dynamic.

But his season came to an end Dec. 10, when he tore his ACL in a win over the Los Angeles Rams.

Still, he's maintained he won't change his style of play.

"As far as changing as a player, there's just things that I'll continue to learn through my whole career," he said Monday on GMFB (h/t Kevin Patra of NFL.com). "There's times when you look back on the tape and maybe I should have avoided that [hit], know when to cut your losses. But overall, as an aggressive player, I'm not going to change, so to speak. I'm not going to let this slow me down going forward."

Even if Wentz isn't ready for Week 1, the Eagles have arguably the best backup quarterback in the NFL. All Nick Foles did last year was lead the Eagles to their first Super Bowl title.

In some quarterback rooms, Wentz regaining the starting job after Foles won a Super Bowl might cause tension. But Wentz said he and Foles remain tight.

"The basis of our relationship is we're friends first and foremost before we're teammates," he said. "So that's made things so much easier to just root each other on and just have complete confidence in each other. We both know kind of where we're at and what going forward is going to look like. So I'm really confident that there'll be no issues with that."
