Wells Fargo Championship 2018: Jason Day Rallies for Win

Rob GoldbergMay 6, 2018

Despite losing a three-stroke lead on the back nine, Jason Day rallied to take home first place at the 2018 Wells Fargo Championship.

The Australian finished 12 strokes under par for the tournament, two strokes ahead of Aaron Wise in second place. He finished the week with a 69 in Round 4, making him the only player in the field with four rounds in the 60s.

The victory at Quail Hollow Golf Course in Charlotte, North Carolina, was Day's second PGA Tour win of the season, matching Justin Thomas, Bubba Watson and Patton Kizzire for the most in 2018.

Day wasn't as smooth Sunday as he had been for the rest of the week when he had just three total bogeys. He tallied four bogeys in Round 4 alone, turning a possible runaway into a dramatic final.

However, this fortunate shot on No. 17 helped give him a two-stroke lead with one hole remaining:

It was his second birdie in a row before sealing the win with a par on the 72nd hole.

The former No. 1 player in the world entered the day with a two-stroke lead, but he came back to earth with back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 5 and 6.

While Day seemed ready to turn things around with three birdies in his next four holes, he lost a three-stroke lead with another set of back-to-back bogeys on the 13th and 14th holes.

Wise took advantage to earn a share of the lead, eventually finishing with a 68 for the third time in this tournament. The 21-year-old former NCAA champion only had one bogey in Round 4 to earn his best career finish.

However, Day showed impressive composure to overcome a bad run and was eventually able to leave with a tournament title.

Shane Bacon of Fox Sports described the player's outlook going forward:

Meanwhile, Phil Mickelson continued his strong season with his sixth top 10, finishing in a tie for fifth place. His run of three birdies on the back nine helped him climb up the leaderboard:

Lefty only finished with six pars in an eventful round but posted a 69 in Round 4. Rickie Fowler was also all over the place Sunday, although he did have one of the best shots of the day with this 76-foot putt for eagle on No. 7:

Still, a pair of double bogeys pushed him down to two-under for the tournament.

Tiger Woods completed a disappointing week with a 74 in Round 4, featuring three bogeys and 15 pars. Justin Ray of Golf Channel discussed the rare inability to put low numbers on the card:

He and the rest of the field will hope for a better performance next week in the high-profile Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass.

Si Woo Kim was the surprise winner last year, but all the big names will be there trying to take home the title in one of the biggest non-majors of the year.
