Marco Verratti Undergoes Groin Surgery, out for Remainder of PSG's Season

Rory MarsdenMay 3, 2018

Marco Verratti will miss the remainder of Paris Saint-Germain's domestic season and Italy's summer internationals after undergoing groin surgery.

PSG (h/t Football Italia) confirmed the news on their official website on Thursday with Verratti having spent the whole of April on the sidelines: "Marco Verratti had an operation on his adductor tendons in Paris today, performed by Dr. Reboul (a member of the Aspetar groin pain centre). The operation was a complete success. The date was chosen to allow Marco Verratti to resume the 2018-19 season in the best possible condition."

PSG have already wrapped up the Ligue 1 title this season so Verratti, 25, will not be a huge loss in their remaining French top-flight matches against Amiens, Rennes and Caen.

They also have the Coupe de France final coming up on May 8, but they are against third-tier Les Herbiers so will be heavy favourites to lift the trophy even without Verratti.

Verratti previously had to undergo surgery late in the 2015-16 season and missed UEFA Euro 2016 as a result, per ESPN FC's Jonathan Johnson:

This summer's 2018 FIFA World Cup is on the horizon, but Verratti will not have to endure more heartache and miss another major tournament as Italy have not qualified.

However, he is likely to miss out as the Azzurri face Saudi Arabia, France and the Netherlands in friendlies in late May and early June.
