Pistons Reportedly Want Stan Van Gundy Return, Front Office Shakeup

Rob GoldbergMay 1, 2018

The Detroit Pistons reportedly want Stan Van Gundy to remain head coach, but his return could depend on possible changes to the front office, per Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

Van Gundy, who is both the head coach and president of basketball operations, has worked alongside general manager Jeff Bower to make personnel decisions. However, owner Tom Gores reportedly wants to restructure the top of the organization.

Van Gundy and Bower both joined the organization in 2014, but the team has missed the playoffs in three of the four seasons under their watch. While the owner clearly isn't happy about the situation, he has continually indicated his respect for the coach.

"We got to make some changes," Gores said at the end of the season, per Vince Ellis of the Detroit Free Press. "I'm just not sure what they are and he's been working the whole season so I need to hear from Stan. I can tell you he's an extremely dedicated man so I think he's been good for our franchise."

Unfortunately, the success on the court hasn't matched this mindset.

Detroit is just 152-176 in four seasons under Van Gundy, with the only playoff appearance ending in a four-game sweep in the first round. Since losing in the Eastern Conference Finals in 2008, the organization has failed to win a single playoff game in 10 years.

The team is also already more than $16 million over next year's salary cap, per Spotrac.

If Gores honors the last year of Van Gundy's contract, the 58-year-old has a lot of work to do to get the team going back in the right direction.
