Giants Trade Rumors: Ereck Flowers Was Shopped During 2018 NFL Draft

Kyle NewportMay 1, 2018

The 2018 NFL draft has come and gone, but Ereck Flowers remains a New York Giant.

That's due to a lack of outside interest, not effort on the the team's part.

According to ESPN.com's Jordan Raanan, New York made the fourth-year offensive lineman available for trade during last week's draft, with the asking price a middle-round pick. No team bit, with one club, per Raanan, finding the price too steep.

Flowers is scheduled to make nearly $2.4 million in 2018, per Spotrac.

The ninth overall pick in the 2015 draft, Flowers lost his job at left tackle when the Giants signed veteran Nate Solder this offseason. The 24-year-old Miami product was expected, however, to compete for the starting right tackle position.

New York continued bolstering its line by drafting guard Will Hernandez out of UTEP in the second round.

Of course, Flowers has a chance to start fresh as new coach Pat Shurmur takes over, but he skipped voluntary workouts, as he has been on the trade block.

"This is a difficult time to talk about those kinds of things because it's voluntary; I get that,'" Shurmur said on WFAN (h/t Paul Schwartz of the New York Post). "There's enough on tape—things didn't go very well last year for the Giants, but he played through the year and there's enough on tape for me to see there's talent there. So whenever he decides to come in, we're looking forward to working with him. Hey, that's just what it is."

Perhaps Shurmur took note when Pro Football Focus' Ryan Smith pointed out last season that Flowers had gone 282 passing snaps without allowing a sack.

Giants general manager Dave Gettleman recently voiced his displeasure with his young lineman's decision to sit out.

"He's in Miami, and we're here," Gettleman said Friday on WFAN (via Schwartz). "He decided not to come. He's an adult. He has the ability to make decisions on his own. This is a voluntary program, and he decided to stay in Miami. If you want to know why he's not here, call him."

The 6'6", 325-pound tackle has played in 46 of a 48 possible regular-season games since being drafted.
