FWA chairman Patrick Barclay praised Salah's performances and said the race was a tight one between the Liverpool man and Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne:
"It's been the tightest call since 1968-69, when there was a dead heat between Tony Book of Manchester City and Derby [County]'s Dave Mackay.
“Right up to the last week or so we thought it might happen again, so strong was the support for De Bruyne, but Salah's relentless match-winning form, exemplified by his two great goals against Roma, seems to have swung the vote by a very narrow margin."
The FWA Twitter account broke down the rest of the voting, with Harry Kane in third place behind the two superstars:
Bleacher Report's Dean Jones outlined why he voted for Salah:
Having already won the PFA Player of the Year award, this latest accolade is further recognition for Salah in what has been an incredible debut season for Liverpool.
After arriving from Roma in the summer, the former Chelsea and Fiorentina man immediately took to life in the Premier League, excelling in an advanced role on the right of the Liverpool attack. He's just kept on getting better and better.
He has scored an incredible 42 goals in all competitions for the Reds this season, as well as notching 15 assists.
As these numbers from Squawka Football show, his goal return in English football this season has almost been unmatched:
The performances from Salah at the business end of the season are perhaps what have set him apart from De Bruyne in the eyes of some.
The 25-year-old has been crucial to Liverpool's run to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals. In the quarters, against Manchester City, he scored in both legs and was an ever-present threat; his deft finish in the second leg settled a tie that, at that stage, appeared finely balanced.

It was his performance against former club Roma in the recent semi-final that really made the world sit up and take note, though. Two goals and two assists from Salah helped Liverpool to a 5-2 win in the first leg, with the second half of the tie to come on Wednesday.
Sports commentator John Bradley lauded the campaign that's been put together by the Liverpool man following that masterclass:
There's potentially more to come from Salah, too. The Reds are on the brink of a Champions League final, after all, while he will also lead Egypt's charge at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia this summer.
Should he inspire Liverpool to a sixth European Cup and Egypt to a strong performance on the biggest stage, then these domestic awards may just be the start for Salah. The forward, given the heights he has consistently set, will surely have one eye on the Ballon d'Or.
