Victor Oladipo's Last-Second 3-Pointer Covers Betting Spread, Swings Millions

Rob GoldbergApr 29, 2018

Victor Oladipo is the latest to swing a great deal of gambling money on what turned out to be a meaningless play.

The Indiana Pacers star hit a three-pointer with 0.8 seconds left in the Game 7 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers, cutting the deficit from seven to four. The Cavaliers won, 105-101.

According to Darren Rovell and David Purdum of ESPN.com, the Cavs were favored anywhere from five to 6.5 points depending on when the bet was made. In any case, the last-second shot swung it from a Cleveland win to a Pacers cover.

"It was probably a swing of $3 million to $5 million in Nevada," Wynn Casino sportsbook head Johnny Avello said. "These types of things happen five or more times a week in our industry, whether it's a two-run home run to cover the run line in the bottom of the ninth or an empty-net goal in the last minute of an NHL game."

With a Sunday Game 7 on national television featuring one of the biggest stars in sports in LeBron James, however, there were obviously more people watching and gambling than a typical backdoor cover.
