Oscar de la Hoya: GGG vs. Canelo Alvarez Rematch to Take Place in September
Golden Boy boss Oscar de la Hoya has said he expects Gennady Golovkin and Saul "Canelo" Alvarez's rematch to go ahead in September after the cancellation of their recent bout.
The pair were set to fight on May 5, but Canelo tested positive in a performance-enhancing drug test, which prompted a withdrawal from the Mexican. The fighter has said contaminated beef was the reason for the violation, per Dan Rafael of ESPN.
Asked by TMZ about an advert done by GGG with Jordan Brand mocking Alvarez's explanation, De la Hoya was critical and said Canelo would use it as fuel for a September showdown.
"To me it's bulls--t." said the Golden Boy. "Once they fight in September, I'll tell you one thing—Canelo's gonna freaking wail on him."
De la Hoya went on to defend his fighter, saying Canelo "is getting really the short end of the stick" and he is "one of the cleanest fighters I've known."
"He's passed numerous of tests, and you know...it was very unfortunate," the promoter added.

Canelo was slapped with a six-month ban by the Nevada State Athletic Commission after he failed two tests. The ban will lift in time for any September showdown.
The rematch between the two was highly anticipated after their meeting in September 2017 ended in a controversial draw. Per BBC Sport, despite an even bout, a ringside judge awarded the fight 118-110 in favour Canelo.
Speaking about his rival recently, Golovkin, who will now fight Vanes Martirosyan next month instead of Canelo, said he's not thinking about a rematch at this point.
"Canelo? Right now he is over," said the Kazakh, per Rafael. "Do I want to have the rematch in September? We'll see. It's a different deal. I'll fight Canelo again. Ask him if he wants to fight me."
In the report, it's said Golovkin is "disgusted" that Alvarez failed the two tests and that the initial contract that was on the table for the fight has since been scrapped.
