Giants Trade Rumors: Ereck Flowers Being Shopped Ahead of 2018 NFL Draft

Kyle NewportApr 24, 2018

As the New York Giants figure out what they will do in the 2018 NFL draft later this week at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, the team is continuing to shape the rest of its roster.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the Giants are having trade discussions regarding offensive lineman Ereck Flowers.

New York drafted Flowers with the ninth overall pick in 2015.

Per Rapoport, Flowers has not shown up to voluntary workouts this year. The New York Daily News' John Healy reported back in early April that the tackle was the only player who didn't make an appearance for the team's first spring workout.

Later on Tuesday, Giants head coach Pat Shurmur told reporters Flowers wasn't at New York's minicamp.

"There's not much to say," Shurmur said. "It's voluntary. I'm of the feeling it's very necessary."

New York has made some offseason moves that have affected Flowers' standing. The organization hired Shurmur as its head coach in January and signed two-time Super Bowl champion Nate Solder to a four-year, $62 million deal. Solder—now the NFL's highest-paid offensive lineman—will be the team's starting left tackle, supplanting Flowers.

New York made it clear to Flowers he would still have a chance to compete for a spot.

"[Shurmur] said, 'Listen, we're going to move you to right, and at the end of the day, the five best offensive linemen play,'" New York general manager Dave Gettleman said, per Paul Schwartz of the New York Post. "That's where they left it, and Ereck was fine on the phone."

Now the Giants have to decide whether to let him compete for a job on the right side, trade him or cut him.

This week's draft, which begins Thursday night, will provide New York with an opportunity to continue to reshape its line. Not only could the team deal Flowers for compensation, but it also owns the No. 2 overall pick, giving it a shot at the top linemen in the class, such as Quenton Nelson.
