PSG Reportedly Want to Appoint Arsene Wenger as Director of Football

Matt JonesApr 21, 2018

Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly ready to offer Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger the chance to take over as the club's director of football.

The Gunners revealed on Friday that Wenger would be leaving his post at the end of the campaign after almost 22 years in charge of the Premier League club.

According to L'Equipe, PSG will give Wenger the opportunity to step into a new role immediately, as the club is said to want him to oversee incoming manager Thomas Tuchel next season (h/t Sport Witness).

As Sport Witness shared, this was front-page news for L'Equipe:

French football journalist Matt Spiro isn't sure whether the Arsenal legend would be enticed by such a role:

L'Equipe has reported that Tuchel is set to take over from Unai Emery at the end of the season. In addition, the club may make another change in the club's hierarchy, with director of football Antero Henrique yet to convince in the position.

The issue for PSG is said to be Wenger's salary, as the 68-year-old would likely demand a lot more than the €80,000 (£70,300) per month Henrique takes home.

Links to PSG are no surprise, as the Arsenal manager is held in high regard following the job he's done with the Gunners. In his time as boss, particularly early on in his spell, he signed a number of top-class French players who helped Arsenal win three Premier League titles.

As Charles Watts of Football.London noted, some of the signings Wenger made during his time in charge were extraordinary:

While there's more to a director of football role than scouting players, a key part of the position is recruitment.

For Wenger, who may have had enough of the relentlessness nature of football management, a position away from the touchline may be ideal. And for a club like PSG, who are still seeking to establish themselves as one of Europe's best, his experience and intellect would be invaluable.

However, it's also been reported Wenger isn't ready to take a step away from management.

According to Jason Burt of the Daily Telegraph, the 68-year-old "has no intention of retiring from football and is even open to the idea of becoming a national team coach." Monaco and Everton are cited as teams ready to give Wenger the chance of another job in club football straight away.
