Rex Culpepper Celebrated by Teammates After Throwing TD Amid Chemo Treatments
Syracuse quarterback Rex Culpepper, who was diagnosed with a treatable form of testicular cancer last month, orchestrated a scoring drive on the Orange's final possession of their annual spring game on Friday night.
The program's Twitter account documented the moment:
"It just felt surreal," Culpepper said after the game, according to Syracuse.com's Stephen Bailey. "It was spectacular. I'll never forget that."
In an Instagram post on March 23 (contains profanity), Culpepper announced he had been diagnosed with testicular cancer and that it had spread to his lymph nodes and abdomen. The redshirt sophomore added that the disease is "very treatable."
He is currently in the midst of a 10-week chemotherapy cycle that is expected to end June 1, per Bailey.
"I just feel like I'm really going into it like it's a prize fight and this is round two," Culpepper said as he prepares for his second round of chemo. "I worked out, I practiced and this time I'm more ready for it."
In four games as a redshirt freshman, Culpepper completed 45 of 75 passes for 518 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions.
