Knicks HC Rumors: Ex-Magic Coach Frank Vogel Interested in Open Position

After being fired by the Orlando Magic on Thursday, Frank Vogel reportedly already has his eyes on a new job.

Per Marc Berman of the New York Post, the 44-year-old Vogel has shown interest in the New York Knicks' vacant head coaching position. New York fired Jeff Hornacek (60-104) on Thursday after two seasons.                         

Vogel was reportedly one of three candidates interviewed for the job in 2016 before the Knicks hired Hornacek. The process apparently went well enough, as the former Indiana Pacers coach thought the team was going to offer him the position, per the New York Daily News' Stefan Bondy.

"I was surprised when I wasn't [hired]," he said earlier this month. "I interviewed with [then team president] Phil [Jackson] and [then general manager] Steve Mills; we had a good couple days together. They said they had one more person they wanted to talk to before they wrapped up the process, and they met with Jeff, and Jeff must've blown them away."

Jackson is gone, but it may bode well for Vogel that Mills remains and is now the president. Per Berman, the Knicks have had internal discussions once again regarding Vogel.

Vogel compiled a 54-110 record in two seasons in Orlando, with his time there not going how everyone had hoped. However, he built a solid reputation by helping the Pacers become contenders. He went 250-181 in five-plus seasons in Indiana, making the playoffs five times, including two Eastern Conference Finals.

While both Vogel and Hornacek landed jobs in 2016, neither wound up taking his team to the postseason. The Knicks now have an opportunity to see if Vogel could be the guy to get the franchise back on track.
