Piotr Zielinski Reportedly Set for New Napoli Deal Amid Liverpool Rumours

Christopher SimpsonApr 13, 2018

Rumoured Liverpool target Piotr Zielinski is reportedly set to receive a new contract at Napoli.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t Calciomercato.com's Jordan Russell), the Poland international is "on the verge" of putting pen to paper on a new deal with the Partenopei, but the Reds are said to still be interested in him.

In February, Corriere dello Sport reported Liverpool had been informed they would need to pay the midfielder's €65 million (£56 million) release clause to land him this summer (h/t Sport Witness):

Should Zielinski sign a new deal, such a clause would likely increase in value to make him even more expensive.

Naby Keita is set to arrive at Anfield this summer, but Liverpool have yet to replace Philippe Coutinho since his departure for Barcelona in January. Emre Can, meanwhile, looks set to leave having not signed a new contract at the club.

Zielinski is in his second season with Napoli and has successfully made the step up to the Partenopei's level, impressing in his 87 appearances for the club.

He has racked up eight goals and two assists in all competitions this term, and he has also shown his eye for goal with Poland too, per football writer Ryan Hubbard:

The 23-year-old is a technically adept and creative player, and despite starting just 10 matches in Serie A this season, he has created 24 chances, according to Squawka.

He has also completed 28 take-ons—he often uses his strong dribbling skills to help drive his side forward—and his passing is outstanding, so it's of little surprise he has found a team-mate with 88 per cent of his efforts.

Although Zielinski primarily operates as a central midfielder, he's versatile and has been used in a more advanced role as well as on the wings this season.

He has a bright future and would be a strong acquisition for the Reds, but he could be a costly one too. And he would be even more difficult to sign if he agrees to a new contract.
