Real Madrid's Federico Valverde Suffers Traumatic Head Injury After Reported Tchouameni Fight

Timothy RappMay 8, 2026

The saga between Real Madrid teammates Federico Valverde and Aurélien Tchouaméni has taken another turn.

According to a club statement, Valverde was diagnosed with cranioencephalic trauma after a second confrontation between the two players on Thursday morning. Per Real Madrid, "Valverde is at home in good condition and will need to rest for 10 to 14 days, as indicated by medical protocols for this diagnosis."

Valverde and Tchouaméni were subsequently fined $590,000 (€500,000) each. There will be no additional punishments handed out by the club.

Real Madrid previously announced that it opened "disciplinary proceedings" after the pair reportedly had physical altercations on both Wednesday and Thursday.

Valverde pushed back on those reports in a statement.

"Yesterday I had an incident with a teammate during a training session," Valverde said. "The fatigue from competition and the frustration made everything seem blown out of proportion. In a normal locker room, these things can happen and are usually resolved internally without it becoming all public.

"Clearly, someone here is spreading rumors, and with a season without titles, where Real Madrid is always under scrutiny, everything gets blown out of proportion. Today we had another disagreement. During the argument, I accidentally hit a table, causing a small cut on my forehead that required a routine visit to the hospital. At no point did my teammate hit me, I didn't hit him either."

But David Ornstein, Mario Cortegana and Guillermo Rai of The Athletic reported earlier in the day that "multiple sources confirmed Thursday's altercation was instigated by a strong tackle from Valverde, 27, on Tchouaméni, 26, in training. After the session had concluded and the squad returned to the dressing room, Tchouaméni confronted Valverde and, after a verbal dispute, it became physical."

The Athletic also reported that Valverde fell and hit his head in the locker room during that confrontation, as the player since confirmed. Valverde largely chalked the situation up to frustrations stemming from what is very likely to be a trophy-less season for the club.

"Real Madrid is one of the most important things in my life and I can't be indifferent to it," he said in his statement. "The result is accumulation of things that culminate in a senseless fight, damaging my image and leaving room for doubt that they will add fuel to the fire of an accident. I wasn't going to speak out until the end of the season. We were eliminated from the Champions League, and I kept my anger and resentment to myself. We've wasted another year, and I wasn't in a position to be posting on social media when the only face I had to show was on the field, and I feel that's what I did. That's why I'm the one who's most saddened and pained to be going through this situation that prevents me from playing the next match due to medical decisions."

Tchouameni issued a statement of his own Friday.

"What happened this week in training is unacceptable — I say this while thinking about the example we are expected to set for young people, whether in football or at school," he wrote. "No matter who is right or wrong, we should always look for the calmest solution to resolve a conflict.

"Above all, I am sorry for the image we projected of the club. I know the fans, the staff, my teammates, the management, everyone is deeply disappointed by the way this season has unfolded. But frustration cannot excuse everything."

Real Madrid appear to be in disarray at the moment, with reports of multiple incidents behind the scenes, manager Alvaro Arbeloa's future in serious peril and supporters attempting to push superstar forward Kylian Mbappé out of the club.

Valverde has made 30 starts for Real Madrid this season, registering five goals and eight assists. Only Mbappé (24 goals) and Vinícius Júnior (15 goals) have scored more in league play, and only Arda Güler (nine assists) has tallied more assists.

He was equally impactful in 13 Champions League contests, notching three goals and four assists.

Real Madrid will be without him for Sunday's rivalry match against Barcelona. A draw or victory would clinch La Liga's title for the Catalans.
